SHOW LOW, AZ - A new brush fire has sparked in northern Arizona, forcing the closure of US 60 and sending ash out over the Show Low area.
A spokesman with the Navajo County Sheriff's Office said the Cedar Creek Fire was last estimated at around 1,000 acres, but strong winds in the area have likely caused it to grow.

Officials said both directions of US 60 have been shut down from mile post 318 to 337 (basically between SR 73 to SR 260).

The burn acreage more than doubled yesterday according to this morning's InciWeb update:
"The fire grew approximately 14,000 acres yesterday, with all growth extending from the south side of the main fire."
Cedar Fire has now burned 26,739 acres.

The winds were southeasterly blowing the fire towards the northeast and toward Show Low. The containment lines held. The weather and winds changed. Blowing from the north. The fire jumped containment in the south on the Rez. Depending on how strong the winds are, the burn area could expand a lot. This fire is far from over.

Flew in last night with my route taking me just north of the Pinetop/ShowLow. Could clearly see the outline of the fire perimeter. Southeast side was burning pretty hot. Upper level winds were out of the east, which is uncommon. We hit smoke at 20,000 feet on the descent. Interior of the airplanes smelled like you were sitting around a pine log campfire. By comparison, the Rodeo fire was kicking smoke well above 34,000 feet.
