I saw this morning that Sky Harbor may have 4 consecutive days of freezing temperatures for the first time since 1983. I think I prefer that more than two or three winters ago when it dropped to 18 in some valley spots and the 20-acre park near my house in Tempe was an irrigation-fed skating rink.
Thanks. I ended up trading my handgun for the work. The plumber was happy. He knew there is no way I could pay him. He said if I want it back later on maybe I can buy it back from him, but I doubt I'll do that.

Guns for plumbing!? What has this economy come to?

Guns are a really good investment right now. Their value keeps going up.

Holy moly - it's really coming down now! Just went to visit a friend for a bit, and when I left it was like a blizzard ... wasn't sure I could make it the half mile home!

Probably should have just stayed with the friend ;)

@chumley
I thought about going back in and staying, but she was sick ... now I feel like I am getting it too - it's almost impossible to stay healthy up here in the winter for any length of time. Damn canyon crud!

Just checked the weather to see what I will be heading out into ... "freezing fog" - is that really a thing?!

It's definitely a thing. I have seen the National Weather Service report both Ice Fog and Freezing Fog as a "current condition" at FLG on numerous occasions.
Fog consists of suspended water droplets. Even though it's below freezing, all the suspended droplets remain in a liquid state down to about 14F. So between 14F and 32F, when there's fog, you can get Freezing Fog. That's what happens when those suspended water droplets contact a surface and then freeze. Generally speaking, Freezing Fog does not result in ice buildup on the surfaces it contacts because nearly as much ice sublimates as fog freezes. Freezing Fog can occur all the way down to -40F because supercooled droplets can remain in liquid form until that temperature.
Ice Fog can happen when there is fog below 14F (below -40F all fog is Ice Fog). In that case the supercooled water droplets freeze even when suspended in air, and become suspended ice crystals. Ice Fog is also called pogonip, which is a derivative of an old Shoshone word.

Well, now, ain't you smart! ;)
We had some snow up here overnight, about an inch or two, which was exactly as forecast. (Imagine that!) Now it's sunny and cold. Time to go for a long walk. Hiking is pretty much out of the question, since my car won't get to the THs.

I originally pictured freezing fog to be like walking through razor sharp shards of ice suspended in the air. Thanks for ruining that one with your smart talk, Chumley...

While I was copying all that verbatim from chumleypedia I also learned that early settlers called it the
white death. Just like you, they thought that breathing in the shards of ice into their lungs would cause death. And you're welcome. I'm glad I could help.

Anyone else looking forward to 80 degrees and sunny? I know it's still 2 more months of winter, but really, does anyone really want any more of this?
http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cdecapp/snowap ... art.action
Anyone else look at these charts? I ask, because I was and noticed that the lines for the new months, which began December 1, seem to indicate that most of California's winter precipitation, and therefore by extension of the track of Arizona's wetter lows, the southwest's (AZ NM) winter precip, seems to occur from December to February, judging by the curve of the average accumulation on the graph. The peak occurs on April 1, but according to the curve, maybe 85 to 90 % has fallen by March 1. Why mention this? If I interpret this correctly, and it is accurate, then we have about 6 weeks left and winter will be ending!

Then, again, there are years like 2011 when snow and rain happened into June, so who knows.

I console myself, on a day such as today, when the high is going to be 23 or so, that the days are indeed noticeably getting longer...

I love this weather, except for in the morning when I'm getting out of the shower.

(not scared - cold)

Yes and I planned a huge hike tomorrow (15+ miles). My group decided that 40 degree weather is no place to be all day long so we scaled it back. Wonder how many peeps we'll see out there?

Lots of below zero temps out there this morning. Definitely the coldest air since 2011!
