The 2023?!?! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

How are things progressing this year? In keeping with the idea that you are only as good as the numbers you post, I'm up to 61,436' of elevation for the year and a modest 132 miles.
Added August 2019: Looking back 10 years later, I honestly can't think of anything more offensive or unhealthy to say about one's hiking, than the above statement. Thats was my OP in 2009. Hiking should never just be about the stats recorded.
January 31, 2023: Have at it.

Curious thing, and I don't see a thread need so I post it here: AEG is not all equal. For example, my AEG in 2010 had a very large percentage that was over 9,000', and 10,000', making it harder in my mind, even if I liver at nearly 7,000'. This year, while well over that year's total, and just over the 5/10 to 4/11 total when I also did a lot of AEG over 10,000' (a great deal in winter) I find my current figures were likely achieved in a cheaper manner, at middle elevations, primarily between 4,500' and 8,000', with only occasional forays above 10,000'. I counted fewer than 10 hikes over 10,000', this year.
Apples to oranges? Oranges to Grapefruits? Either way, It feels cheaper than I hoped. Perhaps, less than I really was, back then. Maybe I read too much into this. I must consult the taro cards. Oooo, the death card! Thats good.
Nonot once mentioned that off trail is way harder, and it infidelity is. It can be really miserable, too, in the right conditions.

I've always thought your stats were cheaply attained and artificially manipulated. I'm glad you finally agree.

Oh, I believe I actually hiked every foot I report, as I wouldn't want to lie to myself, as I doubt more than few would care about my numbers. However, I do note that a hike from 4500' to 7600' is not the same as a hike from 9300' to 12600'. Even more disparity in winter.

I agree... back in 2009 I was not targeting AEG... the 519,000' I logged was all with augmented pack weight... the goal being to develop leg strength and endurance. I hiked all hikes with 45# pack... with the longer days carrying 65-80# packs. The exception was Heart Attack Trail...there I'd go sans pack but wear a 25# weight vest... Event days felt so great... only time I hiked with no extra weight! It gave me an 18,000' best day... I should have gone for 20,000'!
It would be tough to set a standard of comparison that was "fair and equal"... we'd probably have to develop a handicap system... probably should credit age with x1.5 AEG!

Good lord! I woke up, and all of my triplog analysis numbers read, "0"! it's horrible! I had to set my year back to 2013 and rock my self slowly out of the fetal position on the floor. It's too much to take, this zero year! Must go hiking!
Curiously, for some reason, Juanjaimeiii and Hippy also have all zeros but show up on the analysis, where as no one else shows. Anyone know why?
Sadly, my haunting 2012 year is now the only other year in the 3 year total, and so that is way, way down.

Hey... for this hour (day?) I'm once again in the lead on the Analysis page! Likely the last time for that... Old Age Rules!

Y'all are going to have to put up with my kayaking stuff this year, I'm afraid. I kayaked 10+ miles of SD Bay today, and that is how I wanted to start off the year, since I have a lot of paddling planned for this winter and spring.
But, I'll do some hiking, too!

Time to renew the thread, now in it's 6th year. Anyone got anything big planned for 2014? Is Badbern or Joe working on a 1,000,000' year? What about an absurd month, like 200,000'? Anyone going to go crazy this year? These early months can be fun, as people often establish a pattern that get them through the year. I came from behind last year after I bought new flat padded shoes and was able to hike a lot more, but most seem to start early and maintain, if having a good year. Will Fraley beat last year? Will Johnlp regain his glory of 2012? Will uphilljunkie return? Will I ever stop asking questions?

slow and steady stays the course... I'm just hoping to get back into decent hiking shape... likely three months away from that if all goes well.
If that does happen, I'll make a run at an over the top month... and
200,000' would qualify! But... got to get through the
90 days of training... then find the motivation to log
30 long, trying... sort of boring days.... and
I am old!

One thing I usually see this time of year, and sometimes early in months, is the tortoise vs hare mentality. Some make big showings early and slide off, and some just plug away and have a large total later on. A few top performers for 2014 had respectable but not enormous 2013 totals. Some consistently large performers for 2013, or the last few years, have relatively small numbers right now. The early board is always fun to watch.

The early board gets the worm? Or, is the early board bored early?

BobP is over 60,000' of AEG for the year so far. Is he planning to make 1,000,000' this year?

Yup, a thread dedicated to discussions about accumulated elevation gain, and those who are making significant gains of AEG.
