So, the generally accepted definition of "ultralight" is a backpacking rig that weighs less than 10 pounds, "lightweight" is usually considered 10-20 pounds. I'm not that interested in arbitrary definitions though; I'd like to know what the lightest rig you carry is. I know that loads change from trip to trip with circumstances dictating what equipment needs to be taken (or left behind). For clarities sake please post your baseweight (standard equipment minus food, water, and fuel) only (unless, of course, discussion dictates otherwise).

Oh, I love those pockets on the hip belt. I can't understand what took so long for the idea to start showing up.

Thanks for the comment. Hope to post some more hikes soon. Will be heading to the Sedona area soon for winter hikes.

Hey man, I say, do whatever you're comfortable doing. So what if your pack isn't as light as the next guy's? Mine will never be, mostly cause I'm hard on gear. I've read the "strength" claims of some of the fabrics used by certain pack manufacturers. Pure crap and lies. I have a Gregory Z pack that I am tearing to shreds and a Granite Gear pack that I ripped holes in on the first use. Supposedly the Granite Gear pack was "heavy-duty" at about 4lbs for a 4800 cubic inch pack.....................................................
I'm leaning towards to the light end of things...and trying to be more careful not to thrash it.

you mean, you cant believe it took so long for mass market Vietnamese packs to steal the idea from Brian at ULA-equipment.com who has been doing this for a long time.

I was going to give you an earfull for your last post, but then I checked out ULA's packs. Very nice! But you can't expect that everyone would know about companies like ULA-equipment, or that the idea for hipbelt pockets was "stolen". Of course it was stolen. Someone had to come up with it. And who would expect to find a feature like that on just one brand of packs? You need to calm down a little, you hyper flying-squirrel!

Cool. I might actually consider this pack. It looks like the one pack that I could do everything with. Besides, I need a new climbing pack. I've been using my Osprey Aether 45 for the last few years. Awesome pack, but I've put it through the wringer! The duct tape holding the bottom together just isn't cutting it anymore.

well, my ultralight has been getting on the fanatic fringe lately. With this good weather and the average lows of the mid 40's for my past few hikes I have been able to really push the envelope. I dont recommend this behavior to anyone, I suggest you never look at anyone else's pack list to try and determine what is right for you. WE ALL certainly have our own needs and desire different luxury items- so Hike Your Own Hike!
ok, so the disclaimer has been placed. now here's the dumbest pack list you've ever seen. I decided to try no-cook meals that will consist of ProBars and meat snacks, peanuts and other high fat foods. Thats right, no stove, no fuel, no pot. Francis Tapon hiked a huge section of the Continental Divide trail without cooking a single hot meal.

already did. that's how I saved .7 ounce.
I sold the tarp today, and dont need the stakes either as a result, but Im adding on the 7oz fleece, so count that pack down to about 2,15 lbs. that's sick and wrong. hope it doesnt rain or I'll have to build a fort.

What are you using for water purification?
