2008 How much have you done this year?

I was looking over my History for this year and saw that I am already up to 154 miles hiked and over 50,100 feet gained and lost. I'm doing a much better job of tracking my hikes this year. Everything worth mentioning appears to be accounted for.

What are you up to? Now is your chance to brag. You know you want to.

Ya I have an all year school schedule since I'm doing the 2 1/2 year bach....no summer break for me. Although we do usually get a week off for every 2 semesters we go without a holiday. Always nice to get to do some weekday hikes when I get those. Less crowds are always nice.

Hehe. I haven't logged this weekend hikes yet, but I coasted in with a tad over 750 miles this year. Kinna slacking since I did 1000 miles both in 2006 & 2007... But this year I also logged 31 dives for about 13 hours total underwater, had a 4-month relationship, and did a 160-mile float down the mighty Yukon River. So there were valid reasons why I lagged a good 250 miles this year. :D

I only do about 2 dayhikes a year - so most of my 316 miles were backpacking trips. This past year is almost identical to 2007 and somehow I did it with 2 new kids.
Im starting 2009 off well since I have at least 2 longer hikes planned for January already (20mi each). Id like to break the 500 mark this year.

Ended up with more hikes 130 vs. 112 than last year, but with fewer miles (196 vs 250). Had a lot more feet of elevation gain this year, though, with 15,730 ft vs ~2,000 ft last year.

I normally only get every other weekend to hike/backpack but I finished at 716 miles with 157,535 ft elevation gain.

Well I'm at 48 trips 502.44 mi and 139,457 ft elevation gain for me. Not sure if I'll get anything else in this year. My goal was 500 miles and 100k feet, so I'm pretty happy about that.

Joe it would be pretty cool if there was a top mileage link for the year listing the front runners. Or just being able to look at someone else's history like you can do your own. Kind of a mini site competition, just a thought.

Tahoe Mike did 1,800 miles on the PCT alone. Tommy did even more. I'm still in the minors.

I was thinking about this a little. I think it's a great idea, but I also think we need to find a way to weigh the exertion that went into those numbers. To say that someone who did 200,000' of elevation spread out over 2,000mi and 63 days worked as hard as someone who dominated 155,000' of elevation in 300mi over 20 days is disingenuous. ;)

The great thing is - Joe is smart. I have full confidence that he could come up with a way to make the tally fair! :D

62 trips, 259 miles, 55,000 feet of elevation gain. I'm probably the lowest of everyone that's posted their stats, but I'm proud of my 55k feet! I'd like to see a stats leader board...not that I can beat anyone but you guys with your deathmarches to the ends of the earth motivate me to get out of my apartment and into the wilderness!

Each person's achievements are his or her own. For many, 2,000' of elevation gain would be a massive improvement over what they normally do with their weekends over the span of a few months :D

I second that... I actually don't like competing against other hikers, hence I do many solo trips. So I'm usually just hiking against myself, trying my best to stay in shape while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Southwest. :D

I fixed a little glitch where "Canyoneering" wasn't included in the main stats.

When I get a chance I'll put together a leader board type of page. I think the key is to put the link in a low traffic area like the bottom of the history page. The main reason I've never put one together in the past is I'm not interested in the jokers. They will undoubtedly flex their fallacious egos. The other reason being you can't fully view another members stats as the hidden ones are only viewable to the poster.

Personally I hike for several reasons. It can be for any of the following reasons... destination, enjoy the weather, photography, company, etc. However the underlying key bonus in all for myself is the exercise and feeling healthy. I enjoy tracking my progress. Personally I enjoy seeing how I compare, especially to different and like age groups. Others may not. Like the rest of HAZ what you view is up to you.

There's several stats that already let you read into ones endurance or style.
Currently there's...
"Per Hike Mileage" average
"Per Hike Elevation" average
"Per Mile Elevation" average
others could easily be added, however it won't overcome one obstacle. Long distant or whatever it's called hikers don't post on HAZ. In just thinking about it I realize there's dedicated websites to specific trans continental/state hikes and some cater to those trails in general. Aside from that the main issue is triplogs can't be daisy chained (or tabbed) like a journal. I think I can make that happen in the future. In addition, the ability to log trips on listed segments as opposed to hike pages would help too.

What about fastest times on a hike? Something like the "top three" or whatever. Of course, we would need a GPS file or something to substantiate some of the times...

Now that would lead to the jokers so was talking about. Besides, all you would need to do is list the times from Sid Hayes, never read of a time faster on any of his hikes.

I agree with Joe. There are many reasons to hike. There all fun. Seeing some great sites, meeting some nice people, taking pictures, exercise, etc. It's helped me a lot to have people to hike with so I don't get lost. :scared: The exercise has been an extra incentive to hike more even if they are easy hikes sometimes. The more I'm out hiking the less time eating. LOL. It's help me lose 40lbs this year! WooHoo! I made it to 500 miles and 100'000 ft. but a lot of the same hikes close to home for exercise. I didn't think much of the numbers until the last couple months. I never thought I would reach those numbers. Cool.
The main thing is keeping it fun!!! Thanks to all I've hiked with, met or read about on HAZ. :D Happy New Year!

Putting speed there makes a hike into a jog then into a run. If I wanted to go running, I'd go running, not hiking. I think the categories Joe is suggesting are better, not that I care that much. Of course, someone who lives in Flagstaff is going to get most elevation/miles. Miles/hike or average...you're going to see everyone's average jump when they start counting the walk to and from the parking lot, the extra several 0.1 mile "mistakes" and such, but not the time spent milling around drinking beers.

The categories I would like to see is: most unique hikes done that are listed on HAZ (# different hikes), total miles/year, maybe total elevation/year, and leave it at that.

I usually just try to beat my previous year by both more miles and more elevation. This time it won't be easy but I'll give it a shot. The only hikes I really go for speed is on a long hike if daylight is an issue or if te-wa is leading and I forgot my map.
