On page 150 of "Superstition Wilderness Trails East" it states the FS no longer puts mileage on signs. Anybody have any true inside info?
I wonder if it's only the Tonto?
Perhaps they get so many people with GPS calling in complaining? Kinda sad as I know from watching people post triplogs swearing by their GPS when it's absurdly off. A GPS route still must be combined with a real topo map to find an accurate medium.
The Ritas & GC have among the worst posted mileages I've witnessed from working data.

I can actually corroborate that they're there. Ain't seen em, but I've heard em.

I saw the tail-end of one about ten years ago; we see what might be tracks from time-to-time in the upper sections...

Sometimes I've noticed that too, but I just posted a few photosets with signs that are specific to tenths of a mile. And all were surprisingly accurate to what I ended up measuring. Perhaps its specific to ranger district? (My photosets are all on the Peaks district of Coconino)

I did see one on the Pima Canyon trail over 10 years ago, but it was AFTER the G&F dept people said they were all gone.
People were saying they actually may have crossed 77 and moved over to the Tortolitas and beyond. That was before all the latest in crass commercial development in that corridor.

That's usually where we spot signs of them.

Back on topic and off my soapbox: Never trust the mileage on the signs in the Santa Ritas. I think the "Friends of the Santa Ritas" put many of those in and they are almost universally incorrect. Those guys are a great group that does a lot of really wonderful work down there but they desperately need a GPS!!

Albeit the worst rationalization on mileage, they do know how to make a sign that lasts!

Yea, nicely cut with a torch through 3/8" steel plate. Very good, indeed!

Fantastic. The longest-lasting signs are wrong.

They should put on there, "You're mileage may vary"

Last year the sign for the Elden Lookout Trail said 3 miles to the lookout, but this year they changed the sign so it says 2.5 miles.

Some trails may be closer than they appear.
