I was expecting a few bucks, but was pleasantly surprised to see I had built up a $100 dividend! DADDY GOT NEW BOOTS! $125, deduct the 20% for one single item...made them $100, applied my dividend and viola...FREE BOOTS!

This year my REI dividend will be about $10.

But my true REI dividend was more like $400 by NOT buying from REI. Instead I bought the same product elsewhere for anything from 20% to a full 50% off!

I saved $112 on Teva sandals alone. Three Terra-Fi's were $270 + tax at REI while I got one pair for $67.90 and the other two for $44.97 each including shipping both times. Yes, I took advantage from some great buys online, but for a number of items (like the Teva's), REI did not have my size. So whether I wanted to be 'loyal' to a 'local business' (which REI is NOT) or not I had to go elsewhere.

So I'll continue to shop sensibly.

plus a gift card that i got for christmas combined with the 20% discount
in the market for some trekking poles and a water filter
like to think i'm going to backpack one of these days

Don't spend it yet! They'll be the normal 20% off one item coupon starting on friday. There are a few exceptions: anything GPS enabled, kayaks, and all the bikes except Novara, and probably something I've forgotten. I promising myself to only buy something I need this year-- either putting it towards new boots or more cycling gear
