Moving to Casa Grande / Phoenix / Kayenta / Anywhere

Well, I guess I'll have to change my screen name soon. My wife and I are going to be moving to Casa Grande before the end of the year. Listing the house for sale up in Page. No job yet, kinda scary, but my wife needs to go back to school full time. Even commuting to and from UofA, with the house prices in CG we'll save money over moving to El Pueblo. Big change - this will be my first time living off The Plateau since '99. Eeek!

Most banks won't finance a house under 50k in AZ though.

They definitely don't finance mobile homes any more, either, as far as I know.

As for my big old masonry house in Eagar, it is old and drafty, etc. They never built too many homes in that area with central heating. I am sure that some fixer upper type would love it. It's basically a pretty neat house, on half an acre. Very pretty yard, too. It's about 40 years old. Not for sale at the moment.

The "catch" = Have you ever been to CG? There's just not much there... Olive Garden is the 'nicest' eatery, and always has a 1 hour wait to get in. CG Ruins aren't much to look at but they're the biggest thing around. However, if you've ever wondered where those "people of Walmart" photos come from, look no further. Classic examples abound in CG!

Yeah, you'll get what you pay for, in terms of the neighbors, but it is an indicator of surrounding desirable location. As you recall, for being as as out there as Doney Park is, is too is expensive, giving an idea of Flagstaff's costs. All the wind you can enjoy, though, right?

Donkey Park? I drive the bus there every single day. Full of right-wingers. Redneck suburbia.

It's out there, for sure.

You can forget you're in Flag out there. I feel sorry for the 3 Black kids on my bus on that run.

Funny, too, because on my other bus runs, also on east side, (but not in Donkey Park), I have a pretty good mix of Hispanic and Native kids, with a few Anglos and Blacks. I like the Native kids. They know how to be quiet. (And yes, "Native" is how they refer to themselves and prefer to be identified as such...)

Maybe you could change your name to "RobAZ" or "AZRob" and that will at least cover you until you move to Colorado, or....... :sl:

Lots of nice newer construction in Casa Grande. You're close to some nice sonoran desert, Table Top is a nice conditioning hike, Maricopas have some nice wanderings and you are not far from the front door of the El Camino in Ajo. The Gila River around Kelvin I thought was nice to kayak, very easy, and nobody on it. You could do worse--google Trona or Porterville Ca. Gas in Death Valley Furnace Creek---5.18 for regular.

Hey Letty, how goes it? Nice to get that info re: Gila River near Kelvin. I have always wondered about that section.

Big move day is tomorrow. All my S. Az (that means anywhere south of Camp Verde, to you non-northern Arizonans) hiker friends are invited to a 'help me unpack' party...

Best wishes to you and Eli in your new adventure. (I always hate moving but it's also usually an adventure since when I move, I almost always move to a new area!) Wish I could help you but I'm up to my ears in river gear--6 days to go!

It is hot as a donkey down here inside the house. At least the A/C is working now...

Inquiring minds want to know: Just how hot IS a donkey?

And furthermore, just how does it happen that you would possess this knowledge? :D

Page Rob is dead? Why not Casa Grande Rob? Or Sonora Rob?

Tough move going from Page to Casa Grande. I've lived in both locations and preferred Page by far. Be ready to pay some big bucks on air conditioning with several months with temps. over 100+F. Casa Grande has plenty of houses sitting empty as the area was overbuilt before the construction crash. Check on neighborhood security---there are a lot of gated communities. The surrounding desert is farmland that has been allowed to go back to desert---not much in the way of hiking in the evening after work. Good luck.

I like Rob del Desierto. I think he needs a mask and cape, though.
