The 2023?!?! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

How are things progressing this year? In keeping with the idea that you are only as good as the numbers you post, I'm up to 61,436' of elevation for the year and a modest 132 miles.
Added August 2019: Looking back 10 years later, I honestly can't think of anything more offensive or unhealthy to say about one's hiking, than the above statement. Thats was my OP in 2009. Hiking should never just be about the stats recorded.

January 31, 2023: Have at it.

@chumley
this would be way off topic and JimH would yell at me
I thought we agreed that anything on self-momentum page was fair game for this thread? miles hiked, AEG, pictures taken, labels...etc...

on unrelated note, why dont I have all those cool emoticon options?

I've done the math: the correct answer is Tibber.

This is a dumb question, but where is the self momentum page?

Look on the top of the page and click on "triplog Analysis." Then once you are there, you can click on the subheadings, so that miles are featured, or elevation, etc. etc.

The default custom header is a search box. You can change it to triplog Analysis or another option by...

triplog Analysis can always be found from the home page too...

Now I'm depressed that I've found it. It's been an off winter/spring for me. Too sick to train most of January and have moved away from peaks that gave me easy AEG for my morning hikes or runs. Will have to play catch up over the next few months.

Don't feel too bad, I had a big 2013 and end to 2013, and so now having done next to nothing in March, I feel totally out of shape. It is a little hard to to want to get out if you're not feeling well, or if it is cold, or whatever.

I'm basically right at 75,000 for the year. I was just over 100,000' by this time last year. I wonder how moving to Tucson will change my year, with respect to AEG. I expect, that with so many new interesting and big hikes, I'll easily rack up some large totals. Provided there is no forest closure, I might like to do a few large hikes in later May, and in June. I don't want to get caught up in any goal achievement, though. Just hike to enjoy the hikes.

Unless we get rain, I think forest closures are inevitable this year. Though maybe not for the Catalinas. I'd bet on June, but late May wouldn't surprise me either. Except the business interests higher elevation towns get really get upset when the forest closes. Memorial Day is an economic boon for them.

Hmmm... I'm maybe two weeks ahead of schedule for the year... probably about to lose those days to this knee injury??? Have to wonder if it will clear up... or... will I be switching over to bike riding??? So many new trails yet to explore in the area; hate to miss out on all those hikes!

Guess this next week of not hiking will give me time to edit photos and write descriptions!

They can't close the forests - I'm just about ready to maybe start hiking again possibly. :-k

@Patrick L
I know at least one Hazzer who has been hiking on a fire restriction closed forest. Criminal trespass is only a class 3 misdemeanor that never leaves your record. Don't sweat it. :A1:

All kidding aside, when they closed the Apache-Sitgreaves during late spring/early summer several years in a row I found many places to hike on state land, which had not officially been closed. Many of my favorite hikes around Springerville/Eagar were on state land. When you live right next to a giant pile of dry wood you are actually sort of happy when they close the forest. It's not only dumb pumpkins who start fires, but also there have been people who start them deliberately.

Well, perhaps is there is a fire closure of the Coronado NF, I might have to make a drive to Flag and pay a visit to a special friend of mine. #85.

I think it's only a campfire closure, Jim. You don't build one anyway.

Maybe now, but if there is a closure in the future, in the 2nd half of June, perhaps a trip to the Peaks will be in order? That is all I am saying. Rather than start a new thread, my goal is turning from AEG in 2014, since I am finding less than optimal success there (so far) to lots of interesting (hopefully) hikes. One of those would be a return to the Peaks. It will be 2 years since I was up there in late August. Being as I almost don't care where my AEG ends up, and just don't see me getting over 4,000 meters this year, my current 2014 self propelled goal is simply to summit old Humphrey again. Ironic, as in 2006 after moving to AZ, that was as high as I got.

With my Capitol Butte climb today I topped 50,000' elevation and 200 miles for the year. Not a big deal compared to ya'll super hikers, but the last two years (2012 and 2013) I was unable to pass either of these marks. Really happy to pass these two arbitrary marks again, and I still have a few months left in the year to get closer to my totals of 2009 and 2010.

It occurs to me that there are two threads which are basically identical.

Curiously, last fall when I was going for 300,000', for the majority of October and I think November, I was neck and neck with Hippy, until I passed her at some point. Now, I am once again neck and neck with Hippy, which is interesting to me because somehow we both had big years last year, but are substantially down this year.

Are forum posts self-propelled? :-k

Cause this is #4000 for me! :y:
Look out Joe ... you're next. But like grasshopper on labels, azbackpackr is in a league by herself, and I have no hopes of ever catching up.
