I suspect many of you include hiking-related items on your list of new year's resolutions. with the new year upon us, what are your goals? hikes to accomplish, mileages to beat, peaks to bag, routes to find, gear to acquire (and..injuries to avoid)?

just curious what you crazy hikers have planned for the coming year!!

I thought about heading over to Usery to climb just far enough on the Wind Cave trail to hit it, but then chatting with my grandkids on Skype takes priority over less than a hundred yards on the year.

I''ll just exceed my 2011 goal by that much and I'll be even. ;)

I sadly missed my 500 miles by only a few and 100,000 aeg by only about 4,000. One more trip up and down Mt. Ord would have sealed it for both. Though, looking at my totals for the second half of the year (after getting back in shape) compared to the first half of the year-- setting a goal for 750 miles next year should be a piece of cake. :)

I really let myself go in 2010. In 2011, I resolve to shape up, slim down, and get back out there, No settling for anything less than 500,000 vertical and 2000 miles!!

How do you guys figure this stuff out? When I look at my personal page, it shows miles for about a month's worth of hikes. Then when I tell it to show all, it shows about 5 years worth. I do not see any function which allows me to just view this calendar year on there.

I may not have put all my hikes on there, but I do have a calendar with them on there so I can fill in what I forgot to post.

My hiking resolutions include a lot of kayaking. Backpacking some more Grand Canyon trails that I have not hiked. Doing other trails I have not hiked. Numbers (mileage and AEG) are not super important to me, but I do keep track, somewhat. I am more interested in upping the actual "bag nights" that I spend backpacking, and upping the number of backpacking trips. The last few years have been a bit lean as far as backpacking is concerned but this year was better than last year by far. I especially enjoyed the Blue Range's Lanphier-Largo loop, and the Grand Canyon's Boucher-Hermit loop. Oh, and my first time to Aravaipa. Not sure why I put that off so long!

I guess I would like to go on multiday trips, whether kayaking, backpacking or river rafting, at least twice a month. Or at the very least, every three weeks. I think that is doable, and still be able to do my studies and hold down a job.

Hey, thanks, Jim.

Ok so I have 494.96 miles and 65,285 feet.

However, I need to sit down with my calendar and go through and see where I wrote down hikes (mostly Flat Top) that I did not log onto HAZ. So, I expect to have over 500 miles. Which does not seem all that impressive to me. I am sort of disappointed in myself for not at least getting over 1,000.

...Now, that's the right attitude! Might as well add in a record single month on the way. Go for it!

chumley wrote:So! How'd everybody fare on their hiking resolutions for 2010?

What's new on the docket for 2011?

1-
I want to see more which means that once in awhile I've got to hike faster (less pictures).
I don't know that I did much better in 2010. I think I just hiked more miles to make up for the lack of speed.

2-
longer (more miles in a day)
Yep, this I did several times including my longest to Ribbon Falls and back (nearly 16 miles for me - granted it was all level but...) and then the 11 miler Bluff Springs Loop incl Terrapin and the 12 miler Highline-Loop Trail in GNP.

3-
higher (both ways - like maybe the Ridgeline and/or the Grand Canyon)
definitely got the higher in with a few peaks (Wrightson, Lemmon, Humphreys, Ajo, Quartz) and 1 for 2 with the Grand Canyon so maybe the Ridgeline for 2011. Already have Picacho Peak lined up for next weekend and I see a Tom's Thumb in my future and with any luck another foray into the Canyon.

4-
I really want to get more comfortable with this backpacking thing
and I am. Now for 2011 it will be working on combatting the cold when sitting around.

I don't believe my 2010 can be topped and I really don't have much lined up for 2011 yet (except maybe a trip to GNP). I will just try to make the most of whatever I get to do and constantly strive to be a better backpacker and hiker and videographer and photographer but most of all be a better person. I do want to be able to read my GPS maps better.

So as I've heard said from time to time "BRING IT ON."

2010 was a better hiking year than 2009: 205.09 miles vs. 156.64 miles, 27,617 ft vs. 6,172 ft., longer distances, more days on the trail, more unique trips. Not as good mile-wise as 2007 (252.71 miles) or 2008 (220.67 miles), but it was my best elevation year.
Rainbow Bridge this year (finally!)
I am going to get to Canyonlands this year
More Cedar Mesa
More Rez.
