Is there a wildfire burning that might affect your upcoming hike?

A new experimental smoke forecast model is available for up to 72-hours into the future.

As with all forecasts, it's not 100% reliable but it can help you get an idea of where smoke will settle at night, where the plume will go during the day, and give you some additional data before you head out on a hike, camping, or backpacking trip.

For Arizona, select from the "West/Southwest" box. The "Southwest 6-km CANSAC" model is run twice each day for the next 72 hour period. The more detailed FireWx 1-km model only runs 36 hours and covers only southern Arizona.

The NOAA air quality forecast is also very helpful. I use it for both Surface and Vertical Smoke movement. It's a 12 hour forecast movement. This has became very helpful for my summer photography interests. I know when to stay home..

Nice! Just did a little camping not far from the Snake Ridge fire. The model predicted we would be just outside any significant smoke zones, and that's just the way it was.
