Just when you thought you had a handle on the hydration situation, this comes along:

Nothing new here. "Water poisoning" is common for people who hike the GC and don't bring an electrolyte mix (eg. Gatorade).

I'm not sure I agree with the part about drinking only when you're thirsty though.

A normal hydrated adult should be able to urinate approximately 1 to 2 ounces of light yellow colored urine every 2 hours. If you are urinating more frequently than this and your urine is clear in color, you may be over-hydrating and may need to cut back on your fluid intake. If your urine is dark in color and/or smells, you are probably dehydrated and need to drink more frequently.
quoted from the link coaster gave, and generally a rule i follow while hiking. Good link coaster.

Indeed there is something new in there for me Coaster, that's why I posted the article, this is a discussion group, right?

Perhaps it might be best to let people read it before we label it as old information.

This is a good thread Snick. And the right timing too. I've had to get into the habit of watching my fluid intake do to my job that keeps me outside during the hottest part of the day, in direct sunlight, and around jet engines spewing hot exhaust at me. The air temperature at my work station (behind a Boeing 737) can hover up to 137F. :o This experience has helped me imensley during summer hikes.

Good thread especially for this time of year. I have read that for people who are really sweating over an extended period of time need more than just Gatorade. I’ve heard that really salty food like some potato chips help more. If you think about it, that could be why you crave junk food when you’re hiking.

Ahhhhhh the unfairness of it all Larry, electrolytes, carbohydrates, fat and sugar . . . . . I give you junk food . . . . . . . the world's most perfect hiking food.

I plan for 8oz an hour when hiking, and fill up the 70 oz again for dinner and breakfast. then fill up the 70 oz again for a day's hiking. I have always drank every last drop by the time I get back. If you practice enough, you'll get to know what you use on average. It's a good idea to eat salty snacks(cheezits, gorp) or some electrolyte replacement at a break during a long hike too. I really like lemonade with sportaid or cytomax for a kicker on hot days. My next trip looks like it will be in 100's so I'm taking an extra 40 oz container. I would much rather not ever run out of water.
