I haven't seen many either. There seems to be quite a few covies (sp?) on the north side of the superstitions. A few weeks ago it seemed like you couldn't go thirty feet without scaring off another group. Not many babies though.

I saw a clutch of quail this morning while hiking south mountain near the Pima trail. First I've seen so far.

I've seen at least a half-dozen families running across the streets this season in Sun City West.

Last year, one of the babies couldn't jump up the curb (it was the vertical curb, not the rounded ones that are dominant in SC) so I pulled over and helped it up. Poor thing.

In response to Nighthiker's reply:

By this time of year baby quail are already quite large. In answer to your question, a few weeks ago on the way to the Rogers Trough trailhead for a hike to Reavis, there were quail everywhere. We had to dodge many of them with the jeep (they don't like to fly unless they absolutely have to). As we hiked to Reavis I heard many and many took flight as we approached them. Couldn't really tell how large the individual coveys were because the area was so overgrown from the winter rain, but there were a lot.
