In the description on fr 22 I’m reading something about a gate right off the highway and looking on satellite I believe I see a gate as well. Is there no vehicular access past the gate? Is this the preferred parking spot for hiking down Sycamore Canyon?

@kelly14
FR22 has been closed at the highway since the tragic boy scout flood incident. I doubt it will ever open again. All hikes now start at that gate.
Note: it is deceptively signed in a way that makes it seem like all access is not permitted, when in fact only vehicular access is prohibited. Feel free to HIKE past the sign that says you aren't allowed to go there.

My preference is a highway pull-off often used by people to access Sycamore Creek Canyon at.. 33/50/16.20 & 111/28/09.60
A faint rugged trail/route heads northeast from the pull-off following a mixed drainage into the canyon with a large prominent downstream butte to your right while hiking down. The best of what this canyon has to offer starts below that highway access point and that canyon butte. This photo is the start..

IIRC the gate was installed after the Edge Complex fire in 2005, not after the Boy Scout tragedy, 1998.
