Daily restrictions begin Oct. 31 for US 60 Pinto Creek Bridge project

Four-hour daytime closures on Tuesdays and Thursdays start Nov. 7

PHOENIX – As rock removal work advances along US 60 for the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Pinto Creek Bridge replacement project, drivers should plan for several weeks of delays from lane restrictions and scheduled full closures.

Those using US 60 between Superior and Miami should expect delays starting Thursday, Oct. 31, as crews use heavy equipment to remove rock along the highway and build an access road into Pinto Creek Canyon.

Lane restrictions are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 6 a.m. to noon. During those times, flaggers will direct traffic and drivers should plan extra travel time.

Full closures are planned on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Thursday, Nov. 7, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The closures will allow crews to blast rock so the highway can be shifted about 30 feet to the north and connect with the new bridge. Traffic will not be allowed to queue at the closure points.

During full closures, drivers can detour on state routes 77 and 177 through Winkelman. The detour adds at least 45 minutes to a trip between Miami and Superior.

The lane restrictions and closures are expected for several weeks. ADOT will maintain a consistent schedule for restrictions and full closures so drivers can better schedule travel between the Globe and Phoenix areas.

The existing bridge will remain open throughout the two-year, $22.7 million project, which is creating a nearly 700-footspan. Later in the project, overnight closures will be required to place bridge girders and pour the concrete deck on the new structure. A roughly five-day closure is expected toward the end of the project to realign the highway with the new bridge.

Flooding has closed US 60 in both directions between Superior and Miami. Local media aerial video makes it appear that Bloody Tanks Wash just west of Miami has flashed. Several sections of roadway have been eroded from below with undercut pavement and overhanging guardrails. I would expect this to result in traffic restrictions that may last for some time until repairs can be made. I hope we'll get a more thorough assessment later on. In the meantime, I recommend you check with az511 before heading out that way.

Maybe now they will have to repair Highway 88 between the top of Fish Creek Hill and the road to Apache Marina? :y:
It would have been better to repair it as a back up to the problem that they have now. ](*,)

It takes 40 extra minutes to drive the 177-77 route from Superior to Globe through Winkleman. They could make SR 88 a paved, two-lane road and it would still take 2 hours to drive. It was never, and will never, be worth considering as a viable alternative route to anywhere except maybe the Reavis North trailhead.

The same thing happened about 2 weeks ago, flash flood damage left between 1-2 feet of mud and debris on the highway for about 5 miles before Miami continuing into the town itself. ADOT had a small army out there. There simply isn't enough capacity in the drainage to handle the post-fire flooding, where the runoff isn't able to be absorbed due to de-vegetation. I imagine this will continue on and off for the next few years unless they dig a new canyon through the center of Miami and its western approach.

August 11, 2021 - PHOENIX – Drivers should plan for an extended closure of US 60 between Superior and Miami as the Arizona Department of Transportation works to repair flood damage along the highway.

ADOT maintenance crews are planning 24-hour operations to repair the roadway at the Bloody Tanks Wash, which is about one mile west of the closure in Miami. The repair will require an estimated 300 truckloads of boulders to shore up the highway so it can safely reopen to traffic.

GLOBE – Motorists who travel on US 60 between Superior and Miami need to begin planning for a full closure of the highway from Sept. 12-17 while crews with the Arizona Department of Transportation realign the roadway to meet with the new Pinto Creek bridge.

During the 5-day closure, motorists should expect an extra hour of travel and a 10 percent grade as traffic is detoured onto state routes 77 and 177 through Winkleman. Eastbound traffic in Superior will be directed onto SR 177, and westbound traffic will be redirected at the west end of Miami.

Motorists with a destination in the closed segment of US 60 will be allowed to pass the closure points, but no vehicles will be allowed between Top-of-the-World and Pinto Valley Mine Road.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, and end at noon Friday, Sept. 17. The closure is subject to change based on weather.
