What's worse, snakes or bears?

I am not afraid of snakes, yet living and hiking in Arizona I am now always alert to their possible presence. My dog Rudy found one in my bedroom about two weeks ago. It was a nonvenomous gopher snake. It now hopefully lives in my carport storage area, feeding on pack rats.

I am more concerned about bears when hiking and camping, especially in Grizzly Bear areas. If cobras were native to Arizona, I may feel differently.

If I manage to sit on a toilet without noticing there's a bear in it, I probably deserve whatever happens next.

I don't usually check explicitly for bears (or snakes), but hopefully knocking first and checking for spiders is adequate precaution. A spider stick will hopefully do just as well with snakes if I decide to do anything other than simply retreat to an unoccupied venue.
