I am not afraid of snakes, yet living and hiking in Arizona I am now always alert to their possible presence. My dog Rudy found one in my bedroom about two weeks ago. I don't usually check explicitly for bears (or snakes), but hopefully knocking first and checking for spiders is adequate precaution.
