Hi, Im hiking down Bass canyon as part of an out and back of the Tonto section of the
royal arch loop in mid Nov. Im interested in camping the first night at "bass tanks" if there is water there. Although I can find pictures I cant find definitively where these water
holes are. So does anyone have a route description or gps coordinates of this location ?
My best guess is that its about a mile from the Tonto down south bass canyon close to the trail ? Thanks for any info ! Rob

Along the South Bass trail, about a half mile to a mile below the junction with Tonto trail (along the segment of trail going to the river) the South Bass trail goes through a section of the canyon with a black, rock bottom that is full of all sorts of cracks. Within those cracks, water will hold for long periods of time between rain. However, it isn't a spring or anything.
I don't recall there is any good camping right there. Most good campsites are right at the Tonto Trail intersection.

@robxxx what
@nonot said. I seem to remember seeing a group camped near the pools downstream of the crossing, but I just went back to look at past photos and came up empty. It doesn't mean that there wasn't a group camped down there, it just means I didn't take a picture of them! Our camp was near the junction, and I think that's probably the best option. A short day hike to get water is better than carrying full packs just to be right next to the pools. (We also had a rain shower that made finding water a non-issue).
