Hi, does anyone know what it's like to hike Aravaipa canyon in the
winter (now). Is the water unbearably cold with neoprene ? I suspect so but have never been, thanks , Rob

First time I went it was early December. I wore Tevas with wool socks under neoprene socks, and brought dry shoes. It was chilly but doable. It's largely a matter of personal tolerance, though. If there is any ice, I'd think twice about it. I think my preference would be to at least wait until the air temperatures during the day are mid-60's or above. This week looks sort of chilly.

I've day hiked through the canyon in winter, the water was quite cold early but warmed up throughout the day. The creek is shallow, so you'll get some fluctuation in water temperature (although that's likely highly dependent on sun exposure). I'd say it's definitely doable, but expect freezing overnight temperatures.

My favorite time for Aravaipa is after Thanksgiving, to catch all the fall colors. I led a group in from the east end on December 1 2023. The water is not as cold as you might think, but I do wear neoprene socks. Morning temps were about 34-36 degrees.

Agreed. East end after Thanksgiving is special.

Considering that we hiked the Middle Fork of the Gila at 10F, I wouldn't consider a winter conditions a problem for Aravaipa.
