A hiker in Phillipstown, New York, suffered significant injuries when he was struck by a falling tree over the weekend.

Arizona might not have a lot of trees compared to some other states, but we have a high percentage of dead ones!
It's just one more thing out there trying to kill you. Be alert!

Sometimes downed wood can get you. Stepped on some rotting timbers near an old mine, had one break beneath me and I rapidly postholed into the pile. Fortunately nothing shifted and I stiffened my body so I wouldn't fall over and snap a femur. Was a bit more careful getting out.

A guy I backpack with at times had something similar. We were going through a canyon with a bunch of downed wood due to it being narrow and whatnot and I don't think either of us knew quite how deep that area was because it was wall to wall wood; he took a step and was balls deep all of a sudden. Definitely shook him a bit.

A little over ten years ago, one of my hiking buddies, a Scoutmaster from TX was killed by falling tree while sleeping in camp. RIP Chuck D.

Trees!! The menace of our time. When will we act to eliminate this scourge? Won't someone please think of the children?!?!
Seriously though, people really ignore a lot of hazard trees and seem to think they are never a threat. Lots of rotting trees and hazard trees around here overhang roads and houses. People seem oblivious.

That's what happened to 'Governor Hot Wheels'.
