I am hoping to book a last main. flight from
Toronto to Phoenix in the Last week of January for a week of
trekking with a backpack and tent. Never having been to your
area before I am wondering what the weather patterns are
around that time and are there some rather difficult hikes
somebody could recommend. I expect to rent a vehicle to get
there and back but other than that I'm open to any
suggestions. I prefer areas that are remote and not marked
trails as I walk with a GPS and only need to replenish water
as I go. I like areas that offer spectacular geographical
formations or amazing panoramic views.
Any thoughts ?

I recommend the southern flank of the Four Peaks Wilderness. This is the terminus of the Mazatzal Mountain range. It's very close to Phoenix, rugged, seldom traveled and the visuals are candy store quality from what I can figure. Personally I've never been, only dreamed of such.

Maybe start on the west side in Cane Spring Canyon
pass/explore Sheep Mountain
trek over/through Hells Hip Pocket
dance around the Painted Cliffs
explore Goat Mountain, Bronco Creek
by then you'll have ideas of your own

the creeks and springs probably aren't too reliable but you have Salt River and it's lakes as a guarantee bording the entire area
