Two words say it all: slot canyon. There's only one way for a slot canyon to develop, and that mechanism is still quite active. I've heard too many stories about people drowning in flash floods. I'm especially worried about rain farther upstream that you don't see or hear. I wouldn't go in without up-to-the-minute local weather, and for me that would surely rule out exploring a slot canyon as part of a multi-day trip. Maybe I'm too cautious, but I figure I take enough risks usually going solo.

Escalante is awesome. I did it last year right about this time. Do check the weather for those days that you are going in just to be safe. Slot canyons are fine to spend a couple of days in, there are flash floods occasionally just check the weather. It is not rainy season down here right now so the weather should be safe. A lot of the camping that I do is in slots in the Utah/AZ border area. Should be a good time.

In response to tempe23's reply: Trip turned out great, the rangers don't have a clue about what is going on down at the river, they need to get out from behind their desk. Many river crossings, great rock art and solitude.

I hope you posted a good time! I'm out with a torn meniscus and pondering surgery. I can still hike OK, but I can't run :( .

Work has wrecked my last few plans, so I don't have anything on the horizon, but a huge backlog of vacation days. Sometime this year I'd like to get to the Blue Range, which I had hoped to do this Spring. Do you have anything planned? My best recent day hike was the former Scott's/Hyponex facility (now a state wildlife management area) adjacent to the Paulinskill trail. I've never seen so many swans in one place before.

In response to big_load's reply: Ouch, that's tough, just keep positive and get it fixed, ran a 36.09. Very close to booking a Cateract Canyon rafting trip that concentrates on hiking, the Maze etc. Sept 11-17, trilobyte8@optonline.net
