In response to avistar's reply: Sign me up! I've also been hiking about a year; also still hiking alone; prefer pre sunrise start time. I have only hiked in the Catalina canyons so far. I like veritcal hikes, not long walks (guess I'm kind of a grunt). But am willing to make an exception of good views.

You could check out the Southern Arizona Hiking Club. Although a lot of hikers in Tucson perceive it as a club for little old ladies, this really isn't true. It's a big club, over 1600 members, and the bulletin has about 100 hikes offered per month. If you choose "A" hikes and "B+" hikes there will usually be some pretty tough hikers on those. And it usually won't be a large group, either, maybe 2 to 4 people might show up for those. The large groups of little old ladies go on "C" hikes. (Those are some pretty tough 70 and 80 year-old-ladies, too, I should say in their defense!!)
There are also more backpacking trips in the club's bulletin than there used to be, thanks to the efforts of a few of us. I haven't lived in Tucson for almost 7 years, but wouldn't dream of giving up my membership. Most of my hiking pals for private, non-club trips I've met through the club.
http://www.sahcinfo.org is their website.

I've been in Tucson for many years and am pretty familiar with the mountains around here. I really like off-trail hikes and backpacks and I can get up early. I am looking for people that like to do difficult day hikes of Southern Az peaks. Let me know if you are interested.
