Fossil Creek Road closed near Strawberry due to rockslides

Phoenix (August 2, 2006) – 1045 hrs. Due to rock slides last weekend, Fossil Creek Road (Forest System Road 708) is closed a few miles west of Strawberry, Arizona.

“This is a typical rockslide closure,” stated Rob Ingram, acting Payson District Ranger, Tonto National Forest. “There is a 100-foot area that is currently unstable. APS still has to schedule blasting in order to remove the rocks that are in the road. We’re not sure yet when the road will be re-opened. “

The Payson Ranger District office can be contacted by telephone at 602-928-7900 for further information.

Quite the storm in the Payson to Strawberry area on July 27th. Was camping and drove thru the area and near Strawberry had pea sized hail. East Verde was flowing and I also observed a flash flood heading down Sycamore Creek towards the East Verde. Rained almost the entire camping trip. I also camped this past weekend and had rain only on friday.
