I'm going to Havasu oct 6 , I'm going to tent camp and was thinking of just bringing the ground cloth and rain fly. Think I could get away with it, or is it very buggy down there?

Well, there is about 200 other people that will be camping with you, so if it were me I would want a tent for that reason alone. I don't remember a big bug problem though.

Haven't been there in Oct., but it was buggy there in April of this year, some people I was with got some sort of welts. I used to always sleep outside there, though. Slept in a tent last time, but without a tent is usually ok if no rain. And I have often hiked GC in Oct. w/ no tent. As for the 200 or more people around, some of the campsites are more private than others. I'd try to find a more private one.

I was thinking of using a hammock, are there enough tree's at the camground for a hammock. are you allowed to use them there?

A lot of the sites would probably accomodate a hammock. There are lots of trees, no rules about hammocks--I've seen them in use before.

I've been down there several times, never that late in the year though. I've done the tent & that was a little too warm for me (but I always go during the summer (June to Aug). If there is a breeze and you've got a tent that is pretty well vented it shouldn't be too bad. I've done the hammock as well and that was nice as it cut down on weight. I used a pocket hammock and stuffed a sleeping bag inside of it. Each campsite has a picnic bench, the last time I went down there I took a tent but with no breeze at night I slept on the picnic bench with a sleeping pad and a bed sheet. If I were going to go down there in October, I'd take a tent and if it got too warm (which I doubt in October) I'd do the picnic bench thing to cool down.

I'd definately bring a rainfly if you are going to use a hammock. It always seems to rain when I'm down there in October, but the temps ought to be perfect! And to echo azbackpackr: bring Tevas! (you'll be glad you did)

Just hiked Havasu with Friends Hiking Club last weekend. I used a hammock, so I can tell you there's many trees to tie off to, so that's not a problem. But we did have several brief heavy rain showers, so even though I was covered with a tarp, in the middle of the night I quickly set up my tent. In fact, the creek's crystal green water turned brown with mud, and Havasu Falls looked more like Grand Falls on the Little Colorado! We had no problem with bugs, and used horses to pack in essential items (beer, ice, food, more beer). At $15/33#, can't beat it!
