Alpine area hike

In the middle of October my girlfriend and I are staying for a weekend in a cabin in Greer. I was wondering what hikes anybody might recommend in that area. Only requirements are that I have to be able to drive my Nissan Sentra to the trailhead without too much difficulty and I would like to hike around water (which apparently doesn't seem to difficult in this area). Thanks for any suggestions!

In response to azpride's reply:

A couple of my favorites are the Three Forks area, East & West Baldy and the Thompson Trail. (all are accessible by passenger car)

Also...

Springerville, AZ…. Reconstruction work on Highway 273 from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests boundary near Sunrise east towards Big Lake will commence on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 and much of that road will be closed to public travel indefinitely.

Highway 273 will be re-aligned in some locations and will be widened and graveled in preparation for eventual paving in a future contract. The Federal Highways Administration is administering the contract which was awarded to Fann Construction for $ 17 million. The contract calls for completion of the project by the fall of 2007.

Specifically Highway 273 will be closed on August 15, 2006 from Sunrise to Forest Road 554 at the Winn Campground. Certain popular recreation sites will not be accessible including Sheeps Crossings and the West Fork of the Baldy Trail ( Trail # 94). These areas will be closed indefinitely. Sunrise Ski Park is not affected by this road project. Travelers from Greer and other areas are asked to use Highway 261 to Big Lake.

On August 28, 2006, an additional road closure will commence to include the stretch of Highway 273 from Winn Campground to Highway 261. This stretch will be closed from Monday morning at 6:00 am to Thursday evening at 6:00 pm. The following facilities will be open for use from Thursday evening at 6:00 pm until Monday morning at 6:00 am: Winn Campground, Gabaldon Campground, Lee Valley Reservoir, and the East Fork of Baldy Trail (Trail #95). No reservations are being taken at Gabaldon or Winn.

Areas of the Forests adjacent to these closed portions of the highway will remain open for use but travel will be affected by the reconstruction activities so careful route planning using an Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests map is recommended.
Questions about access into the area can be directed to the Springerville Ranger District at 928-333-4372.

I like South Fork Trail. You can either follow the creek or take the fork up the mtn. to Mexican Hay.
