Arivaipa Canyon permits and use

Hi all, quick question for anyone who knows. All I've read so far seems unclear whether you need a permit for day trips into the canyon. Is the permit only neccesary if you're doing an overnighter? On the BLM page it says a $5/day use fee.
Pretty confused, anyone who's done this before and can let me know it would be appreciated.

A permit is needed for day hiking
Judging from Randy's post I'd call the BLM and find out what the conditions are first.

Hey Joe, could you recommend a good creek/canyon hike with water that is not inside any of the fire restricted national forests right now?
I was supposed to go to West Clear Creek a few weekends ago, but unfortunately the trip was canceled and I'm itching to do something similar ASAP!
I know the Tram fire is going making west clear creek and impossibility, but I wasn't sure whether Wet Beaver Creek fell into that Coconino restricted area as well. They are close so I wouldn't doubt it, have you heard anything?
Anyway any suggestions would be great. I've been through alot of the trails in the trail index, but unfortunately it seems as though a lot of those are within the fire restriction areas right now. (80% of Tonto closed, HOLY!!)

Hey pixelfrog---It's not a "creek" hike but one of the only areas open in Tonto is the Chain of lakes and the Rolls north of Sugaro. You can hike Cottonwood Creek(dry wash) from an old ranch to Sugaro Lake's east end---cool water and almost clean there....
Don't know how long this would take hiking. Only did it in my blazer.
