for the next 3 weekends I cant go hiking (passport approval, scrapbooking retreat, then family in town.) Come August 11th I'll be dying to get out of the Valley. If anyone can think of a getaway in cool temps for that weekend, gimme a shout.
Im thinking WIlderness of Rocks loop w/ overnight backpack. Open to suggestions.

Mike,
I do not believe that overnighting is permitted there. With that said, have fun and be stealth.

I'll be climbing Mt. Whitney again on the 11th. Plenty cool up there. Heck of a drive for a weekend though.

Ive no idea what that means, Joe.
btw, Kurt thats an intersting subject, stealth camping. I have been following some very interesting reports (and sometimes funny too) of Rural backpacking involving sleeping on private property, city parks, behind retail markets etc.. And since when is there no camping on Knoll lake unless you stay on designated (read:
pay) sites? Twas my first stealth camp then. Im up for more of that, I kinda like the thrill. We all live too safe, its rediculous.
cant stop on the sidewalk, loitering- cant say that, might offend someone- Ill give up all my rights so long as the government protects me
Like I said, rediculous.

Dogs are prohibited, except seeing-eye dogs or handi-dogs in the Bighorn Sheep Management Area portion of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness.

Backpacking is definitely permitted in Wilderness of Rocks. I have camped there, near where Lemmon Creek crosses the trail, many times, although I haven't camped there for about 10 years. I do recall seeing the "No Dogs" sign.
However, I hear Mt. Lemmon hiking temps are much higher since the big fire. Just a thought. I just returned from a nice backpack along South Fork Trail #97, near Eagar, with a group from Tucson. They were talking about Wilderness of Rocks, said it was pretty hot there in summer.

Yeah, during the day it does get pretty hot out in the Wilderness of Rocks this time of year. Could always spend the day goofing off up higher on Lemmon then head down later though. Plus there is usually some water in Lemmon Creek.

Hey Mike, you should go to Camp 4 in Yosemite Valley. That is the "stealth camping" capital of the world. There are so many climbing bums that poach sites and hide in the boulders around the campground; it's kinda ridiculous. I'm just jealous though...wish I could be a climbing bum.
Anytime you need a "stealth camping" partner, I'm there. I'm pretty good at it. Besides, I haven't had a good hiking/backpacking adventure in a while.
Unfortunately, I'll be in Colorado/Wyoming that weekend.
Oh yeah, I got a "stealth camping' story for you. Two weekends ago I got some more practice up in Flag, two nights in a row, but different campgrounds. (sorry Coconino NF)

well guys I just threw W.O.R. out there as a feeler, I'll go wherever's clever. Later in the year, Im going to check out some rural backpacking (a hike that starts at your back door- and follows rural roads or even railroad tracks) and do some stealth into the "no camping" McDowell mountains. There is a possiblity of sneaking across FireRock golf course and into some citrus grove before poaching a night fishing spot in the CAP. Matt, you know what Im sayin?
until then, Im looking for something legal for the 11th.

te-wa:
Knoll Lake campground was closed all 2006 for "reconstruction" and may have changed some of the rules pertaining to camping around there when it reopened. I only first visited Knoll 3 or 4 years ago, but I've always seen "no camping" signs near the lake.
I assume the (very popular) area along the road before you get to the campground is still open to dispersed camping, though I haven't been there this summer yet.

Mike,
I gotta start wearing a hat....... In this heat I confused Wilderness of Rocks with HEART of Rocks.
There are myriad good stealth spots throughout HoR.

Holy crap! That would be awesome! I have a "stealth fishing rod" for just such an occasion. Although, CAP fish tend to be a little too big and aggressive for 2lb test!
