Lots of nice off-trail peak bagging in that area: Candelario, Ashburn, Copper peaks, for example. Also, you can 4WD into the southern end of the Santa Ritas, catch Temporal Gulch, Josephine Canyon, etc. Lots of smugglers go through that whole area--I'd be armed or go in a group, (or both!) Gardner Canyon is not far off, up Hwy 83. Lots of hiking up through that canyon, nice car camping, too--I have not heard whether or not the backside trail from Gardner Canyon to Mt. Wrightson has re-opened since the big fire, but the ranger station could tell you. It once was a very nice trail.

Tumacacori Mtns., and Atascosa Peak also are short drives, across I-19. The Ruby Road, 289, etc. etc. Atascosa is a very popular hike. Edward Abbey once worked in the fire tower atop that peak, and people like to celebrate his birthday there.
