I would also like to know the cause of the fire on Mt. Lemmon, I do not believe it was hikers or campers.

After 9/11 I didn't think I could be shocked anymore but it seems things and people just continue to do devastatingly shocking things. Her story is just so lame too. Burning a letter? It sure seems more deliberately set to me.

All there is left to do is cry with the residents of the area.

Pretty shocking about that 18-year USFS vet on fire patrol starting such a fire.

Oddly, we're sitting over here in the Upper Central Valley grasslands (such as is left of them) in California. Last week, they caught three teenage people who had set a string of fires. They were driving around with emergency flares in their car, lighting them and then tossing them into the grasslands. Works pretty good if you're wanting to burn down the grasslands. So they catch them.

Well, then apparently some "copy cat" dude sits around and thinks, "Hey, this is COOL." So he stuffs his flares, matches and fire scanner in the car and takes off last Friday and sets TEN MORE fires. They only pinned him on one of the fires but judging from the area, etc. it's a pretty good bet he was responsible for all of the other ones. Go figure.

What kind of people do these things? Apparently it's the "just plain weird" segment of our population. Hopefully, our paths will never cross theirs.

Unfortunatly, our paths probably cross...ever notice how the people that do the really odd, disturbing things are never called on it before the incident occurs...police talk to the neighbors, who say things like..."they seemed normal"...perfect example, that rich guy who killed his family, blew up the house and took off for the wilderness last year...what's his name...his community was stunned!

See this is my theory...I'm totally safe where I live right now...my neighbors on both sides are really odd. They do odd things, are completely anti-social....one even wears a mullett (though his camero does not have t-tops)...so with these guys...I'm safe....it's the ones that seem normal that you have to look out for.

Normal, educated people do stupid things. Why else would my wife's hairdryer have a warning that it could be dangerous to operate the hairdryer while taking a bath/shower? I'm certain the FS lady didn't intend to cause the damage she has caused. I don't excuse her actions, but I don't think they were intentional.

It's such a hard concept to grasp, but I believe we all help to make the world the way it is, good or bad.

But Geez,come on! burning the X's letter! Hell of a catharthis,don'tcha think!! : I hope it wasn't intentional,just really damn stupid,considering her "profession". Yes,we are all surrounded by people of varying degrees of some kind of weirdness+it keeps it kind of interesting,bizarre,funny,+sometimes sad!

It is disturbing to think that an experienced Forset Service employee did not have enough common sense to to think beyond her own personal agenda. But I wasn't there so I don't know all the particulars.

Last week in Sedona we spoke to a ranger who was on fire patrol and had found a badly extinguished campfire in the backcountry fueled by the 'Closed-Extreme Fire Danger' signs the FS had put up. I-yi-yi! Legitimate social protest is one thing but stupidity is quite another.

Sometimes I think "That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard."

Inevitably, however, I end up uttering that phrase again and again - people keep toping themselves. Truth is far stranger than fiction, and the stupidity of humans knows no bounds.

Depending on your religious persuasion or inclination, perhaps its time to start hoping for the "end of days" (in whatever form your belief takes shape) just to get it over with.

We humans seem to keep trying harder and harder all the time to end it ourselves in a slow and painful way - perhaps a divine spanking is in order. Hell, ANY kind of spanking/wake-up-call is in order.

Okay - I'm done now.

Damn, there goes my theory about Mullet hair cuts, pimples, and old Dodge vans being a part of forest fires . . . . .
