inexpensive clothing for rugged travel

Wondering if any of you might be able to direct me this week on clothing...I'm travelling to India for several days, and will be staying in areas that are pretty remoted/rugged at times, where I'll need to handwash (and line dry) clothes that I'm wearing. I know REI has some pants like this, but I hear they are SUPER-expensive. Anything you would recommend? Because of the length of time it takes to dry (especially in humid areas), I'm going to try to avoid any type of cotton pants/shirts...

Have you thought about those Nike running pants? Also, go to Big 5 Sporting Goods. REI is really expensive overall. Oh, and Bass Pro Shops is having a huge sale this weekend on everything.
As a last resort you might be able to find something decent at a thrift store. I had a pair of light running type pants I found at one, and they were killer. Lasted a long time and would dry our pretty fast. I lived in FL then too, so it was really humid.

Yeah I would recommend a thrift store as well. Camo pants are about as durable as they come, but you may not be wanting to run around India looking like a militant. I did get a pair at a thrift store that was plain Khaki color before.

Ha! Yeah, you're right on the camos...particularly when in Kashmir!
I've been told I shouldn't even wear cargo pants, as they won't be accepted there at all. But even if they were khaki's, my guess is that they are all cotton, which will be hard to handwash and long to line dry?

Campmor catalog has cheap zip-offs. I got a pair. They are quick-dry, khaki colored hiking pants, for 20 bucks. Soft and comfy, too, at least the ones I got are.

Indian clothing pattern changes according to the seasons. You will find many varieties of clothes to wear in India while traveling and shopping. There is no such definite answer to the question of how to dress up in India because we don't adhere to any dress code as such. and you can wear the khakis even while in kashmir
