Stripped from a another topic….

Calkwalk: I need a digital Camera
----------------------
Snick33: I have a DSC350 D-Link Digital Camera that I'll trade you for future computer services. It doesn't have a digital view finder but it takes great photos. It's very small and compact and low and behold, I actually have all the paperwork and software for it. Let me know, you are welcome to it, you can pick it up today if you want. Send me an E Mail.
----------------------
Calkwalk: I've 'googled' that camera.... It looks like a good starter kit, I graciously accept your offer. * insert electronic hankshake here *
----------------------
Calkwalk: Camera Update...

Heres the deal... Older camera / new OS

running XP Corp.. the usb and win xp are speaking. The camera is detected and the drivers loaded... HOWEVER the application ( photosuite ) does not see the camera... nor does any other twain scanner app...

I went to the website for the camera ( dsc-500 (google ) and installed XP beta drivers.... no luck

Camera fires up when USB is plugged in... so i know thats ok..No conflict in device mangler either. Ive contacted manufacturer for advice...

Any suggestions would be helpful.
-----------------------
Snick33: Now I'm feeling like I got you into something ugly. As I recall, it's a tempermental little beast, but once I got it fiqured out, it worked fine. I can only assume I had help from either the manufacturer or the company computer geek.

Wished I could be of more help but you are well aware of my computer knowledge shortcomings. Damn, that big cup holder just popped out of the PCU again.

Let me know how you make out so I can sleep at night.
-----------------------
Calkwalk: did you have it working in XP? Or were you using 98?

Cuz I think the problen is XP
-----------------------
Snick33: Windows 98 Cake, Hope you can work it out. I bought that camera last year so hopefully it's not that outdated yet.

Windows 98 advertised the extended ability to fully support 'Plug n Play'

What they didn't anticipate were 'Plug n Play' disc drives. This is the category a digital camera falls under. Your reading the memory card in the same mannor as a disc drive.

The problems began to surface when you had a directory of the drive open... such as explorer or a any program accessing the drive.
- users would unplug the drive/ 'Camera' without closing explorer or the program first. This would lock up the computer in some instances. Sometimes it would just flash off a warning.

With the release of WIN 2000 this problem was more understood and corrected. Device Drivers for ME, 2000 & later such as XP require the user to let the system know about disconnecting before doing it.

This is a little program that probably sits in your taskbar to the lower right corner. You pop it up and let WIN know you'd like to disconnect. It then tells you when it's safe to do so.

-------------------- fine where do I get ! ...lol

CW I'll see if I can find it

Okay I'll assume you got the XP driver from here...
( dead link removed )

If not try that one next.

If it's still not recognized by Photosuite try explorer
press the 'windows key' + the 'E key'
do you see removable drive anywhere

if you do... the driver is working and Photosuite may not recognize removable drives or something and you'd need to copy the files to folder on your harddrive such as 'PHOTO-UPLOAD'

if not... try the 2000 driver instead of XP

if it still doesn't work let me know and I'll continue

Joe..

Thanx So much for your attention to this saga..

The drivers I got were different than the ones you linked to...

I grabbed them, installed... no change... except it knocked out my sound blaster drivers. Got those restored.

photosuite still shows no devices under the twain camera list..

The camera does activate when USB is plugged in.... nothing else

Windows explorer shows no removable devices except A: D: E:

A = floppy D: is cd rom E: is cdrw

Nothing else....

The drivers for this camera will NOT allow drivers from another OS version install.. ( It says your OS is XP, these drivers are not compatible )

Im building my wife a system, ( still need a few components before first post ) and may just put 2000 on it, see if that works.

The saga continues...

additional note

reinstalled the dsc-350 drivers.. open photo suite....it saw the camera but said to check usb cable...

Its fine

rebooted.... knocked out my sound blaster again... and when I went to open open photosuite, it said server was busy when attempting to find camera... huh?

For what it's worth Cake, I do recall my Windows ME treating the camera as another drive in the same way my Sony Memory Chip adapter is recoginzed as another drive.

Please keep in mind my limited knowledge of computers when you read this . . . .

:D Joe, I really appreciate your taking what must have been a LOT of time to organize this new section on digital cameras. THANKS! I own four digitals and am actually quite interested in this thread even though it doesn't relate to particular situation. I will look forward to coming here to get 'updated,' so to speak, on the latest situation(s). I do have a question and I think it's relevantto ask it here and not start another topic. What if I had one of my digitals availablefor sale? Would it be appropriate to you this thread as a sort of 'classified ad.' Somehow, I don't think so. Seems like there should be someway to swap stuff on this awesome website, perhaps even with a way to help you make a commission, too. Anyway, you all let me know if this seems to be 'off topic,' and I will stand corrected. Thank you.

Sorry CW I don't have any great solutions for you good buddy.

**The only other advice I have I really DON'T recommend. That's to disconnect any and all addon cards. Basically your left with just the motherboard, harddrive, and video card. Then see if the camera is detected by photosuite. Then add in all other addon's one by one... rebooting each time to figure out exactly where the conflict is at. **

Like I said this is way to difficult for the situation. There's a multitude of possible reasons for your problem that depend on your setup. It may also be a mis-directed or outtadate activex entry. Although that'd be seriously unlikely with XP.

I've gotta ask...
Is there no memory card in the camera. Cause you can get an adapter for the three popular memory cards for around twenty bucks at Fry's Electronics

Oh yeah... one last tid bit... Make abosolutely sure your are NOT hubbing a USB port. This causes more problems than you can imagine.

Yeah I don't think I wanna encourge selling on site for various reasons.
Personally I would suggest E-Bay for any on-line transaction. It's a sellers market, you usually get excellent returns. It's a buyers market if you're looking for a rare item or a quick buy.

As for anything money related... The only contributions accepted are information. There's plenty of good orginazations that would accelerate with a contribution. HAZ just isn't one of 'em.

The camera project has ended ( for now )

Windows Xp has become unstable, to the point that the device Mangler will not uninstall things, it actually locks up. XP is a very stable OS, but I guess the 'trauma' of the whole camera vs sound-blaster has done damage.

Luckily I have the restore feature turned off.

The format and reinstall of XP was sucessfull.

I recieved a message from D-link Tech support suggesting the win2k drivers. I may try that, I may not. Guess Im a little gun-shy right now.

I appreciate the advice Joe, and I appreciate the camera Snick33

I'll keep you posted.

Have you gotten the camera to work yet? Most likely it is XP (which can become unstable when you are messing around with drivers, I learned this the hard way.) One solution is to install a secondary operating system and boot to that to use the camera. My favorite OS is 2000, haven't found anything that doesn't work with it, unlike I had previously found with XP. If you need any help, feel free to ask.

Hey thanks guys....

Ive got all the operating systems... I kinda dig XP.

For some reason, the others were unstable with my DSL. Including 2k.

One of these days days Im gonna get that camera back to snick and just go buy a newer one.
