Im thinking about an early morning hike in South mountian park on July 4th.

Probably the alta trail.. We will do a shuttle hike. ( cars left at both ends of trail ).

Any takers?

I would be interested, but it depends on how early, and my later plans. Early is good, due to the heat. What time does the park open?

My biggest hike in the last two months has been the "parking lot of Home Depot", but I could swing it, you name the time. Earlier the better since I have to fight the traffic to get over there from Gilbert.

I was thinking between 6 and 7 am start.... Im sure we will be out of the sun by 9am latest assuming we start on time....

Since it's a holiday, the traffic should be somewhat subdued as well..

:D Sounds like fun to me! I've never hiked that end of South Mountain park. It'll be good to see new trail.

Hope this doesn't post twice, but something happened so I'm typing over;

I don't know about these local summertime hikes but I'm antsy to go hiking, sooooooooo let's do it. I'll bring up the rear, ok?

So what's the plan - I say the earlier the better.

The baby is beautiful

I would be interested in shuttling people on the hike. I still can't hike but I would at least like to be the water boy. Let me know if this would work. the Jeep can carry a bunch of people in a pinch.

Yes, congrats Snick - very cool. What is the little critter's name?

As far as the hike goes - I'm interested. No promises, but South mountain is the neglected mountain in my hiking lexicon. I've hiked it 2 times. I just don't know it that well - so I'm definitely interested.

The earlier the better - 6:00 or earlier start is fine by me.

We are in for the early morning 4th of July hike. Let us know the directions as we have only been to the park once, awhile ago. Just the short drive to the top look-out.

Ok Everyone.... we will plan this for a 6am start.... We will meet at the southern trailhead.

Follow San Juan road until it ends. We will meet in that parking lot. We will leave a few cars there and take the rest to the Bajada parking lot and do the trail north to south. It's about 4.5 miles, not too difficult.

Detailed trail description and driving directions can be found here

See ya Thursday morning!

I am sorry, but I have to decline the hike for Thursday morning. I would have liked to hike with everyone, but unfortunately I have a prior engagement (I tried to convince my friend to do this hike, but he doesn't want to drive that far).

I am however doing hikes every morning this weekend.

Friday: Squaw Peak - a circumference trail of some sort

Saturday: Usury Mountain - another circumference trail of some sort

Anyone that would like to join me is welcome - they will all be early (start time of around 6:00) and they will all have a target distance of 5+ miles (the more the better).

Just send me a PM if you want to come along.

David - Welcome to HAZ!

This is Cakewalk's gathering but I wanted to help clarify the meeting place as posted by Cakewalk.

From anywhere in Phoenix north of South Mountain you simply follow Central Avenue south. Central Ave turns into the park. Continue on until you reach a triangular curve but continue straight on San Juan Road and follow to it's end. I call that the west Alta Trailhead.

The east Alta or Bajada Trailhead is in this Map it's the dot a half inch left of the words "Summit Rd"

Thanks for the input Joe...

In the event of thunderstorms in the morning, I plan on going anyways!

How cool would that be, to hike in the rain?

See everyone tomorrow morning!

Thanks for planning this hike. That was a fun trail. I plan to hit it again since the forests are all closed. :)
