Forest Road 172, 172A and 172B on the south side of the Superstitions - Has anyone driven these routes in the last three or four days? Please answer up if you have. No speculations please....

Is that the road that goes through the mines near Miami to Haunted Canyon?

Edit: Nvm that's 287...your talking about the road to Woodbury TH and Roger's Trough TH. I'd imagine on some of the last stretches it might have some snow and ice but it could be melted by now too.

Forest Road 172 is the road that takes off from Hewitt Station Road, crosses Queen Creek wash and goes north into the superstitions to the junction where 172B goes left to the Woodbury Trailhead and JF Ranch which has a locked gate blocking the road into the ranch. Turning right at the junction is 172A which will take you to the Rogers Trough Trailhead.

FR127. That's the one that goes around the backside of San Francisco Peaks. The snow is pretty deep.

Posted on the Rogers Trought thread that I did this road last Sunday. Took 172 to 172a and over Montana Mountain. 172 to 172a was really nice. Not that bad at all. Water in the bottom of the large was but everything else looked good. There was a LOT of snow on Montana Mountain though. It was melting but was there.

Well thanks to my daughters brother-in-law we did not drive Forest Road 172 today. He wrecked the Chevy Tahoe yesterday evening that we had planned to use today. Talk about a let down! Instead we took the grandkids in my Ford Windstar out to Mesquite Creek just past Tortilla Flat where we hiked and let them play in the water.

I have an F150 with high clearance. today I drove 172 to get to Woodbury Trailhead. Road wasn't to bad if you kept the speed around 20 and in 2nd gear. Then I took a look at 172A to Woodbury. It looked impossible for a truck. What was needed was an ATV. Oh well gave me some white knuckle driving-where less than an inch off on the driving on the edge would lead to a roll down the side of the mountain. At least I took some pictures before the drive got interesting
anyone know another way to get to Woodbury?

I'm thinking you mean Rogers Trough? 172 goes to Woodbury as you first stated. 172A goes to Rogers. It was getting a little gnarly a month or so ago. Perhaps that storm that dumped 3 inches on the Four Peaks made it worse. They generally grade it yearly around February I think.

You can take 650 in from Happy Camp but I can't imagine that be better than 172. Maybe someones else knows? The long way is 342 from Top of the World. It takes you right through a mine for a section. When I took that back in 2004 there was a definite 4x4 section, however it may be different now.

I hear the drive from Top of the World is very scenic however... I think Boyce Thompson Arboretum even has 4-wd tours that they put together for this.

I think that FR 172 and A and B are quite the drives both for the scenery and the challenge of the road conditions. I've only had to drive FR 172 to Woodbury but it is tricky as sometimes I wasn't exactly sure where the road was thru the wash areas. Kat drove to Roger's Trough so in that case, I just got to sit back and try to take pictures... other when we got to that last hill and I felt I should get out and push for a little extra oomph.

Judging by this October 17, 2010 picture there obviously is no trouble driving FR 172 all the way to Rogers Trough Trailhead.

There's too many cars at that TH for me. I'll try somewhere else.

Is it apple season at Reavis Ranch? That would bring out the crowds.
