Just wondering about the current condition of the road to the Tortilla Trailhead, especially the last 2.5 miles described as 4WD. Thanks.

It is all four wheel drive and the worst part is the very beginning where you turn off of Apache Trail. Short wheel base, very large tires and no overhang front or rear of the vehicle is necessary to navigate up this part of the road. Also width is a consideration as no one has cut back the brush that grows along side the road for quite some time. Think pinstrips on a nicely painted vehicle. But it is a nice drive and gets one back to parts of the Superstitions that most people never see. The trails that begin at the end of this road are also in bad shape. Wear good foot gear, long pants and a long sleeve shirt unless you want to donate some blood along the trails. Read the recent posts about the JF Trail, Hoolie Bacon Trail, Peters Trail and the Lost Dutchman Mine Jr. for more information. You can easily walk the road to see the condition the road is in.

muchas gracias, senor.
I have a 4wd camper van - long and wide, so I may just walk in.

Yes, that is a good idea as you definitely don't want to tear up your camper. There is no shade as you walk in so be sure to take a good hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The winter sun is low in the sky and you will be walking south all the way in. I often hike this road in the early morning before sunrise or after the sun goes down just to avoid the sun.

I arrived at FR 213 about 8 am. After walking the first hill, I knew I wouldn't be driving in. I rode my mountain bike in: 3.22 miles, took about 45 minutes both in and out.

I just hiked the road in from Tortilla TH, and I must say, for a roadwalk, it isn't too bad and the surroundings are very pretty, especially with all the water out there right now. For dayhiking, I could see how it would be a bummer to have to walk an extra 6.4 miles r/t.
