This trail is 3.3 miles one way, according to the Tonto website. The elevation gain is in the 1500'-2000' range. There is also an intersecting Trail #199 that's shown on the Tonto "Printable Map" that I can't find anywhere else. If this trail exists, it appears to be roughly the same length. It's possible to do a loop with both trails and a 3.25 section of FR221, making a 10-11 mile loop, 2500' elevation change hike. If Trail #199 isn't there, we can do an out and back on the Bobtail Trail, and then the same on the Pioneer Pass Trail and check out the forest fire damage. Temps have been decent lately, but who knows if they'll hold. If we break 110, this might not be such a good idea. Leaving Mesa at 5:30am as usual.

of course... he may even wait until about 8 AM after he eats breakfast, cuts the lawn, does some laundry... then decides to go outside for a mid morning run... heck, he may even decide to just run to the trail head instead of driving there.

You mean rested for the ride home after you've taken a nap while we still have 5 miles to go?

I was looking on the map and it's possible to take FR221 from FR651 to the bottom of the Bobtail Ridge trail so we can start from the bottom of the mountain and get the climbing out of the way a little earlier. FR221 is not listed as a dreaded "4WD" road, but I know that junction at FR651 looks a little gnarly. Any thoughts or preferences?
