I'll be giving a talk with slide show at the monthly mtg. of the Homolovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society, to be held at Homolovi State Park in Winslow, this Thursday, July 16 at 7 pm.

Topic is rock art (petroglyph) sites and other archaeological sites in W. Arizona, near Yuma, and a little bit about the ancient people who lived there.

We are meeting at 5 pm at La Posada for dinner.

Y'all are invited!

Elizabeth

I had a great time when the Homolovi Chapter hosted the recent AAS State Meeting. Great group there in Winslow. Check out http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=8065 and http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=8066

Wish I could join you... :(

Thanks, guys. Thanks for the links, Randal. Especially the Chevelon--I haven't been to that lower area. I found several panels between Chevelon Crossing and the dam a few years ago, and also a shard/camp (?) site. I GPS'd the locations. The Heritage person for the Apache-Sitgreaves NF at the time was Dr. Charlotte Hunter. She had an official NF computer map which showed all sites in the NF. There were no reported sites on her map in that part of Chevelon, so she added them and named them after me. I told her that the glyph sites were not hard to find and surely had been reported. She said if they weren't in her map they hadn't been properly recorded, so there you go! Four sites, named Planteen I, II, III and IV. :)

Homolovi is a beautiful place along the Little Colorado River near Winslow, AZ, The hiking trail for Tsuvo has some nice views and just north of the park is the Little Painted Desert County Park. It is a great place to hike and see some neat fossils (sharks teeth and petrified wood). Homolovi is going to a five day week and closed two days per week in October 2009 and the campground will be getting closed also. check out www.azstateparks.com for more info on closures.

The state parks website doesn't say anything about Homolovi going to 5-day closures, at least as far as I can tell...it just says that's for Tuesdays and Wednesdays at:
Fort Verde State Historic Park
Oracle State Park
Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park
Tubac Presidio State Historic Park
Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park
Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park
