Need some advice. Want to hike into the Grand Canyon from the North rim in the end of next September. Any recommendations for places to stay before hike. Thinking of trying to get a permit at Cottonwood campground, then going to Phantom Ranch/Bright Angel campground and then hiking out to the South rim. Any suggestions woulf be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. TD

The campground at the North Rim Park is very nice, if you want to camp. There's also plenty of free camping in the National Forest before you enter the park. The North Rim Lodge is quite nice, but can be pricey and hard to get reservations. I've never stayed in Jacob Lake, but the Cafe has great grilled cheese sandwiches...

Here is what the NPS says:
http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/cg-nr.htm
On the North Rim, campground reservations can be made for the North Rim Campground.
Reservations can be made through the National Recreation Reservation Service
by calling 1-877-444-6777 or online at http://www.recreation.gov/
Reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance.

There is a Falcon Guide by Bruce Grubbs "Camping Arizona" that has great descriptions of North Rim Campgrounds. In addition to the NPS North Rim campground there are several others
Jacob Lake - about 50 miles north of the Rim
Demotte Park - about 25 miles north of the Rim http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/kai/recreation/ ... otte.shtml North Kaibab Ranger District (928) 643-7395
Indian Hollow - a little west of the North Rim developed area

There is dispersed camping in the Kaibab National Forest. Availability depends on hunting seasons.

There are a couple of Backcountry Use areas with open camping but you would need a permit. Widforss or Ken Patrick
Also Toroweap - way west of the North Rim developed Area.

The cheeseburgers, New York Steak and garden salad at the Jacob Lake Inn are the best in the world after a week in the Canyon :)
