My wife and I have recently gotten back into hiking and backpacking. We are looking for a GPS to help us with trails and distance and all the basics. There are so many out there and the price range is also way out there.. We dont need the super fancy one just one that we can down load a trail and when we come to a fork we can check to see which direction to take and where we are on the trail. Also if anyone has one for sale please let us know. Thanks for any help you can offer. Jerry

Hi Jerry. Welcome to HAZ. :welcome:

There have been quite a few forum posts regarding GPS over the past several years. While you may get some new and updated responses to your query in this thread, there's lots of useful comments which might help you decide in the previous posts. You can always use the "search the haz forum" box at the top of the forum page to see what's been discussed previously.

To save you a few minutes, I've linked a couple of the more informative discussions here:

Dont want to spend a lot but also dont want something that does not do what we need. I would like to be able to download trails so we can track our progress and know where we are on the trail. Thanks, Jerry

I have a Garmin Etrex and 60csx. I really like the the 60CSX that has the additions of the topos and everything. Also nice to be able to see where roads and water may be while on trips, just in case something doesnt go to plan. The etrex works, very basic, will do what you want, but I would highly recommend the 60csx, which is quite a bit more expensive.

Yeah, but be forewarned it doesn't come with the maps. Those cost extra, and are DVD rom only, no CD ones are available.
