See highlights of Ken Burns new national parks film

Flagstaff residents are offered an exclusive sneak peek of highlights from Ken Burns' new PBS film "The National Parks, America's Best Idea." The free sneak peek will be offered on Sept. 10 at the Orpheum Theater, 15 W. Aspen Ave. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the film starts at 7 p.m. Seats available on a first come, first serve basis.

The showing is co-sponsored by KNAU (Arizona Public Radio), National Parks Conservation Association, Western National Parks Association and Grand Canyon Association.

Ken Burns has been making documentary films for more than 30 years. Since the Academy Award-nominated "Brooklyn Bridge" in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made, including "The Civil War," "Baseball," "Jazz" and "The War."

"The National Parks: America's Best Idea," which was written and co-produced by Burns's long-time partner Dayton Duncan, is slated to air on PBS starting Sept. 27. The film is the story of a radical idea: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone.

This compelling narrative traces the birth of the national park concept from its evolution nearly 150 years ago. Using archival photographs, first-person accounts of historical characters, personal memories and analysis from more than 40 interviews, and what Burns believes is the most stunning cinematography in any of his films, the series chronicles the steady addition of new parks through the stories of the people who helped create them and save them from destruction. It is simultaneously a biography of compelling characters and of our American landscape.
The events are free, the weather should be great and the aspen will be turning. Come on up for the fun. :)
