Peeley fire on the Tonto National Forest in Mazatzal Wilderness
Payson, Ariz (8/31/2009 – 1230 hrs.)
Summary: The Peeley fire, southwest of Payson, Ariz, is burning west of Mt. Peeley in the Mazatzal Wilderness. The lightning-caused fire was reported on August 22. Crews are conducting burn-out operations below the north side of Mt. Peeley along the Arizona Trail (Trail 23).
Smoke advisory: Smoke from this fire may be observed from Highway 87 in the Deer Creek Village and Rye areas. Smoke may also be seen from the Payson area as well as from Bartlett Lake outside of Cave Creek.
Cautions: The fire and associated burning operations are affecting a portion of the Arizona Trail approximately 2.5 miles from the Mt. Peeley trailhead off Forest Road 201. Hunters and recreational users are asked to avoid this area for their safety and the safety of firefighters at work on this incident.
