Malapais in the Supersitions

I'll be hitting up Malapais Mountain in the Supersitions. Should be some primo views right smack dab in the middle of the exotic wilderness. Approx 9mi 2,700 AEG. Currently the forecast is for 85 degrees, unless that goes over 95 I'm game with an early morning start. This is an extended version of Geronimo Head not yet posted on site. Part of the ascent is steep on loose terrain. It's rugged off-trail, very little bushwhacking but cacti rich if I remember correctly. I can pickup from downtown PHX to along the US60 if you would like a ride. Probably leave about 5-6am. A hearty but not a fast pace hike as the views are stunning.

I'll be trying a version of this route this winter but it's currently too hot for me to attempt this, the non-Arizonan that I am. Will you be posting your extended GPS log?

Hi Joe, I would like to tag along on this hike if possible. Can't wait to get back to the Supes! I've only live here for a year so have only hiked them for one winter. I've only met one other HAZer (NONOT) unfortunately. HAHA the unfortunate part was that he saved my butt when my truck broke down deep into a FS road, figures he was one of the cool folks from HAZ! Thanks again noNOT!

Matt, you should really thank Wally, if it wasn't for his generosity I never would've been in the area. Glad to see you're still here and participating :)

The forecasted low 80's on Sunday are looking sweet... even if it jumps ten degrees it'll be worthy.

I'll PM the committed late Friday.

It always happens when you're most excited about a trip. With me it was Brown's Cave trip with Joe last year... Came down with something the night before :?

By a rise of perhaps ten feet we entered upon this mala pais, and soon came to where the lava was not in waves, but seemed to have cooled in mass, presenting a granulated appearance, much like cooling sugar; and a little further we found it light and frothy looking, as if a hot foaming current had cooled to stone, porous and spongy likE pumice-stone. J.H.B. (written in 1877)

Now I'll use Malapais in a sentance. Man the views to and from Malapais are awesome. :)

That pretty much describes it... as we forged waves of desert to it's summit :)
