I flew over the aftermath of the big burn yesterday. Here are pictures before and after.

There are small spots where there still reside some green trees, spots where there are dead trees and huge areas where the timber has been totally removed by the blaze.

The erosion from this is going to be brutal. Streams and lakes are going to suffer.

We went up last week--our cabin is fine. The firefighters obviously did a great job protecting our area.

It first hits you just as you get to 260 at the Young turnoff. Down in eastern Overgaard it is horrible. We drove to Show Low from there and it is a nightmare the whole way until just before Show Low. I can hardly believe what I saw. But when you approach Show Low, it all just disappears, and things are great. We were going hiking but it started to rain/thunder/lightning, so we didn't continue.

I bet it is pretty bad if you head down 60 from Show Low but we didn't go that way. Amazing the damage humans can do. If lightning caused the fires, I could accept anything, but the way these were started just breaks my heart.
