I've used porta potty's in boats and they aren't all bad. This rig looks like it might work. It combines a tent for both a toilet and a shower. I'm going to be doing more car camping than hiking this year and I'm a two shower a day kinda guy. Heck I over pack as it is so one more thing won't kill me.

Actually MaryPhyl, a modern Porta Potty has tank that you remove, bring home with you, and dump it in the toilet, neat and tidy

I own one of them. They work great for camping out of the back of your car. If you gotta have a shower or if you gals don't like to sit in an outhouse to pee or if you don't feel like getting a flashlight in the middle of the night and walking to it, then this is the tent for you. The teenager girls really like using it. They get really scared of all the daddy long legs that seem to flock into the outhouses in the wooded country.

I have one too. My wife (Mrs. Gun-toting kokopelli) and I once spent 3 weeks jeep-camping in the northwest. We had to use campgrounds because up there you can't just go down a dirt road a few miles and camp, it's all private. Our shower stall thing was the envy of all the campgrounds. If you get one of those solar showers you're all set. If it's overcast just heat up some water for it. Just like the pioneers did it!

I know this is off the subject but where in the Northwest where you camping and needed to camp in campgrounds?

All the National Parks up that way: Yellowstone/Teton, Glacier, Northern Cascades, Olympic, Big Sur, and some others that are escaping me at the moment. This was in '98. But it was wierd trying to find places to camp between parks. Especially in Idaho. We went down a likely-looking back road one time that looked like there must be good camp spot there somewhere. We ended up in a strange little "town" in the deep forest that looked straight out of "Deliverance". You know, where they stare at strangers? So we turned around and found a little private campground. Everything seemed to be private property.
But the shower stall thing was a real winner. We put a pole over the top of the jeep, bungeed one end to the roll bar, and hung the shower off the other end. It was great!

I am thinking about making my own out of one inch galvanized pipe so I can hang a solar shower ( which works quite well). I have a toilet called lugable loo, I bought the seat and cover from popular and the five gallon bucke from home depot. I place plastic bags inside the bucket and the deodorant (larada's or popular) inside the plastic bag. Disposal, I empty in a toilet (improved campground) on my way back from camping. I also have a folding toilet stool that also uses plastic bags. Ziplock bags (gallon size) I use while exploring caves.
