Weatherford to Lockett Meadow

Considering late July hike from Flagstaff via Mount Eldon Lookout Trail to Schultz Tank and stay a night, and then from Schultz Tank on the Weatherford and drop down into Lockett Meadow for a night. Couple questions for anyone who is familiar with Weatherford Trail.

* How far is it on the Weatherford to the Inner Basin Trail junction where we would drop down into Lockett Meadow?

* Seems pretty much like no guarenteed water on the Weatherford or at Lockett Meadow, correct?

* Any advice in general would be appreciated from anyone that has taken this trip.

Thanks, Woof!

The only guarantee for water along that route is Schultz tank which is large and deep and should have good water, however there will be rain (most likely during monsoon season) and you may encounter a dripping, but scummy, spring along the lowest parts of the trail near Weatherford Canyon. It is dry in the Inner Basin unless springs are flowing, but I don't think there are any along the trail, and they will probably have been sucked dry by the City Wells by late July. There is a very high likelihood of water being available at the Inner Basin Entrance in the form of a spigot . There is a tank at Lockett, but I question the water quality there.

The DEX has the accurate mileage, but I give around 9 to 10 miles from Schultz to Lockett Meadow.

Schultz tank to Inner Basin junction is approximately 7 miles and about 3,000 feet of elevation gain. Therefore, Schultz to Lockett should be a little closer to 11 miles.

If I were to camp just before Doyle Saddle, about how far is it if we tried to go up Humphrey from there?

Thinking we could shed our packs at the inner basin junction or somewhere close by, and then go up from there. After that head down into Lockett Meadow.

I believe Doyle Saddle is about 6 miles from Schultz, then another 5 miles from Doyle Saddle to the Humphrey's summit.

I'm a little biased against camping on the Peaks since I live within such a short distance of them and generally prefer a soft bed to hard ground, but the saddle might be a nice place to camp. Plan for wind, and expect lighting and storms in the afternoon and evening if you do camp there in July. It could be dry and sunny all day, but that is typically the exception that time of year. If you like it, you'll have a pretty good lighting show up there in a good storm.
