Above or below the rim?

Going camping this weekend, Friday afternon through Monday night, regardless of fire restrictions (that is if the whole forest isn't closed).
Top of the rim = cooler temps, but always climbing up to return.
Bottom of the rim = Easier hikes, probably more water (creekside) hikes, but warmer temps.
Sierra Anches = Campfires allowed? I haven't heard.
I'm thinking about a base camp on Milk Ranch Point or somwhere similar where there are good views from the top of the rim, and then exploring from there.
I guess I'm looking for suggestions. Campfires aren't necessarily on the list, but it would be nice to grill on charcol. Anyone know/recommend a preferred spot?
Thanks,
Paul
