Don't waste your time -- Redman Cave has been BLOCKED WITH AN IRON GATE. It was installed by arrogant people working for the government. Simply outrageous. They have NO RIGHT to do this, but nobody stops them so they do it anyway. A real tragedy, these people need to be held accountable.
UPDATE 2/16/2011:
The gate, shown here in July 2005, is reported gone! hooray! Hats off to nimrag for the update.

Wow, great first post, welcome to HAZ.
Any thoughts on why it was closed?

Since its on the Apache indian reservation, I would guess its not the US forest service that has closed it. Since there are IDIOTS who feel the need to go into caves and vandalize everything inside, do you know of a better way to stop them from destroying the caves?

What area is Method man cave? I know there are several caves around Young, that have been closed off. They have locks on them and you can get the keys from the ranger office in Young.

Method Man and Red Man were an artistic spoken word album producing duo from about 12 years ago. Their popularity is debatable.

It was a generalized joke. Probably too obscure for most people.

I wouldn't have thought so, but then obscurity is my second home.

Redman is not on the res. Closed because of a non existent bat colony. Also a caver died in the sump there, due to bad air in a pocket he came up in. His buddy panicked and got out safely but couldn't help his friend. The sump was pumped out eventually by another caving group that led a push effort only to be stymied by a second sump a short way past the first.
This is one of the more significant Karst areas in the state. The forest service right now is trying to arrange logging ( again ) in that area. We've found some flaws in the NEPA and are actively trying to get that area pulled. We've got a verbal from head of region but not looking like it according to the tree markings up there. We're getting a former FS contracted hydrologist and a couple of other science types involved. Since the fire on the res a few years back it has increased the erosion in this area a lot. And cause this watershed supplies the Apaches some of their water source for this area we might drag them into this too.

Depending on the map you are looking at, its confusing as to whether its on the Rez or not. MyTopo shows it being on the Rez and the USGS shows it just to the west of the boundary. We did cross a fence on the way in, just to the east of the cave, but I do not know if that is the boundary. I was there on Saturday and Red man is not closed, repeat, not closed. If i can figure out how to add a picture, I will show the open entrance.
