Great Western Trail?

We saw a new sign on the Beeline heading north from Mesa a couple of miles before you get to the trailhead for the Ballentine. It said "Great Western Trail." Does anyone know if this is a new trail and what it is like/where it goes/how far the trailhead is?

I call it the great powerline trail because almost all of the segments are located adjacent to or part of electrical transmission powerline right-of-way. The proposed segment east of Apache Junction are golf courses. Part of the great western trail you noted was at one time the Fort McDowell to Camp Reno road late 1860's. The problem with the Bulldog portion is you need to pay for access only at the Mesa Ranger District and though you have permission, the sheriff's deputies may not allow you to enter from the north end. Once I came in from the south and was existing at the north gate, I was sent back by a deputy because he told me it was closed. Threatned to cite, arrest and impound my vehicle if I did not go back.

I checked out that Web site. Oooo, all those...vehicles. And powerlines! I think this might be a trail I will skip. The Ballentine is just a little ways away anyway. I was just curious. Thanks for the info.

Next time you are up on the Beeline, take the road to the west, forest road 1453. Head west apx. 1/2 mile and cross the creek and head north apx. 1/2 mile real neat riparian area.
