Hey everyone,

Im looking for a good overnight backpack trip which I can complete in Jan around the Phoenix area. I'm leaning towards the superstitions but haven't made up my mind yet. Any ideas from the forum.

There are plenty in the Supes. Jan. is alittle cold, but can never really tell in this state. 70's one week and then 50's the next. Reavis Ranch, Rogers Canyon, Charlebois, Reavis falls, Peralta. Those are all pretty common areas (easy trips). It all depends on how far you want to go, want you want to see. I'm sure that some of the more experienced Supe hikers here have more ideas. I personally like Rogers Canyon. Nice hike, water (sometimes), ruins and a nice camping spot.

Due to the possibility of snow and sub-freezing temperatures at night in the eastern Superstitions in January, I would recommend the western Superstitions.

Right now it is apparently flowing fairly well out there, so camping may not be limited just to near (but not next to) springs. The Dutchman trail between the intersection with Red Tanks and the intersection with Terrapin contains dozens of at-large sites you may enjoy.

If you have never been out there, Peralta, Bluff Springs, and the Dutchman between the two would make for a hearty, but enjoyable loop.

The Western Sups get a lot of hiker and horseman daytime traffickers in the winter months.

Camp well off the trail and out of sight if you want privicy.
