Planning a trip to Reavis Falls in mid March. Was wondering, when is the best time to see the falls? I know it depends on the weather, how much snow/rain we have had. Have a friend coming out fron NC and he has never backpacked before. So planning on an easy 2 day backpack. I have heard that the trail coming out of the falls can be a bi*ch. Any helpful info?

I asked yesterday about a two-night three-day backpacking trip in the Superstitions over late March 2011 and this was the response I got from azpride, who had done a similar length trip with Reavis Falls as one of their destinations:

Not to much rain or snow this year. Might just go to the Ranch from the north end. Have been really wanting to see the falls though.

Last year it was gushing in late February. Even if it's not at peak, I would assume it'll still be worth it. Just remember, getting to falls requires some scrambling and a lot of rock hopping and coming back out of there is a major grunt. I hiked down there this fall and even though it was barely a trickle, the hike is still worth doing. The terrain is really diverse and there's some great camping spots.

It should still be a cool sight. Just don't plan on taking your fully-loaded backpacks up the spur to the falls.

Thinking might be a good idea to camp before the falls, and then hike without packs to the falls? I don't mind some scrambling and hopping. @ Jim - Just really don't want to do it with an overnight pack on. My pack only weighs about 15 - 16 pounds if I leave my tent at home.
How bad is the trip out, really?

Memory flashes back thoughts of it being steep. Looking at the profile on the description page it isn't much steeper than the road (now a trail) hike. If you stare at it for a while and notice each vertical line is 500ft then it starts to make sense combined with the fact it's not a clean blazed trail.

If you hike out early in the morning this hill climb excercise will warm you up a bit. Just remember to stop, turn around and enjoy the views occasionaly as you ascend this trail. Also watch for the indian ruins near the top of the climb before the trail peaks out.

As also recommended do not camp at the base of the falls as this little box canyon is one of Arizona's larger swamp coolers.

Set up your campsite along side the stream where you first encounter it. Very few hikers climb above the falls and take pictures from that pretty area so take the time to have some additional fun by doing so and bring us back some pictures. ;)

Thanx for the description. This is the one I read several months ago that got me interested in the falls. Reading it again just made up my mind to do this.
