Chevelon Lake Canoe Camping

What do you think of the chances of getting a canoe on Chevelon Lake at the end of February? I'm concerned the roads might still be closed, along with the lake being ice covered.
Are there any good alternatives? Thanks guys! :A1:

I dont think any of the roads will be open by the end of this month. I also just looked up Chevelon Canyon Lake on the arizona fishing report and it says "The lake is ice-covered. Unsafe ice."

Would you be carrying the canoe down to the water from the main parking area on the north side of the lake? Or is there a better place to launch a canoe?

The coolest thing in the world would be to see an ice-fishing shack with saguaro in the background. People back in Wisconsin would trip ... :)

Ha ha very funny! Chevelon Lake is well up on the Mogollon Rim, in the snow country.

I think you are stuck with Adobe Shop to get your photo...

Pretty sure the roads will still be closed, though I'm not sure where the gates are located when accessing the lake from the north side, which is lower in elevation and may not have any snow at all right now. The best plan is to check with the ASNF Black Mesa Ranger District before you go.

Yep, that's what I was afraid of. I doubt this storm coming in this weekend is going to help!

@keepmoving: The only place I know of is the north side near the dam. Thanks for the info.

@chumley: I'm hoping the north side is open, I'll investigate further closer to the end of Feb. Thanks for the info!
